Now, I am sure there are many threads on this topic.

I have put it in basics as its all new to me, had my 1000D for approx 6 months but havent cleaned the sensor before? Now, I havent seen any dust spots on my images, so should I leave it until I do?

Is there a good simple photographic test to test for dust on the sensor?

I am looking around and seeing allsorts of swabbing pads, blowers and such like.

I imagine its quite a debateable topic as to what works best.

So, fire away at me with the basics and some recommendations.

Cheers!

If you cant see it don't go looking for it ! leave it alone until you get sick of spending 20 mins per photo cloning it out :D

Is there a test? I see photos where people have pointed at a grey sky to spot the dust? Are there settings to use when taking a test shot?

Don't clean it unless there's a spot showing on most of your pictures. If you want to test - set camera on aperture priority and f/22 and shoot a clear sky/wall.

This is overkill unless you do a lot of shooting at f/22 so if I don't see much at f/11 I don't bother - that's my break even point.

I wet clean mine when it needs it - this past 12 months it's only needed doing twice - and I spent a month in India for part of that!

set the lens to a small aperture f22 should do fine and take a picture of the sky,

m u s t t y p e f a s t e r :p

heh ok I will try that! Cheers!!!

Cleaning the sensor has never crossed my mind really but I had a £20 voucher to spend on amazon that expired soon so ive used it to get some cleaning fluid & wipes.

As others have said , don't worry unless you see any. I've had my 50D almost 2 years and not had to clean the sensor. I'm not fussy where I change lenses either so the sensor clean function must be fairly good.

Intersting comment Mike.
I always try to be mega - careful when changing.

Had a friend try to clean a sensor on a 20D - Fail
Had it cleaned at Focus (30 quid) - Fail
Bought some cleaning swabs on here - Result :)

some cameras do not need cleaning much my40 d I cleaned maybe 3 times in about 3 yrs ..
Now I have a 5dmkII it like a dust magnet have to clean it almost every month.

As the rest have said shoot a small appature ie white piece of paper light sky then zoom in and scroll around the pic wide apetures you will see nothing unless it like a matchstick :]

there many types of cleaning but you DO not clean the sencore you cleanthe low pass filter.
