Hi all,

I am considering selling some prints (already framed) to local businesses (you know the sort of place: tea shops with pictures on the wall with a price tag on them).

I was just wondering if anyone had done this, and what is the best way to do it? Does the shop sign for the prints, or pay for them? Do you collect the money if they sell one, or when you deliver them (and give the money back for any unsold ones)? What sort of percentage would the business want to make on the print?

Thanks in advance!

Well, 58 people have thought this thread was interesting enough to view but not to post  :D

Any one have any views/ideas on this please?

The only view I have is that sale or return items are normally paid for by the shop, then any they want to send back are refunded. If i were selling things on for you I'd want to make AT LEAST 20% for myself. No idea if that helps you atall.

In truth I don't know how those arrangements work.

However, if it was my business, I wouldn't buy them from you. I'd let you put them on the walls and expect a commission for that in the event you sold any. In percentage terms I'd probably look at anything between 10 and 20% dependent on the sales value and how much space they were taking up.

I think this could work a couple of ways.

The easiest would be where the shop lets you use the wall space to display YOUR prints. The neither charge or pay for this and you get the money from any sales. Replacing the sold image with another for them. They get free decoration and you get the exposure.

Then you could rent the space from the shop and pay them for the wall space. This would only be worth while if the walls were putting your images in front of a good sized and well targeted market.

Or, you might find a business that would be open to buying prints off you to place on the wall. What they then sell these on for is their call and you've already made your sale.

Lastly, is the split arrangement. You provide the prints, they sell them and the money gets split between you.

I doubt there is one solution that will suit all cases and it's mostly going to be up to you to choose someone whos needs best matches yours. :)

Sale or Return is a fairly simple thing, You would supply the pictures to the business at no cost with a list of all prints and prices that you want, it is then up to the business to sell the prints at what they want to, they would then pay you when they have sold, the times that I have dealt with SOR it was up to the person to go in and check if any had sold.
If you do go for this ensure that you supply a list of the photos with good descriptions and number them on back so it is easy for the person to identify the picture. I would also get the list signed by the company and yourself and keep one for yourself and the company keeps one aswell

The way I've always seen it done is; no fees or commissions involved either way. They get free decoration (and are seen to be supporting local artists / culture) you give them your contact details to pass on to any would-be buyers (and stick em up on the wall (your details that is, not the buyers)). Then you just deal directly with Joe Public who wants a print.

Edit: What a lot of brackets :D
