Hi All,

I have heard alot about people uploading images to sites, where you upload the images and potential clients browse through them and can purchase them based on tags etc.

I was wondering if many people use these and which you feel is the best if any? and why?

Right.......So nobody sells photo's online or can recommend a service that they use. Really?

I'm looking at Photobox but i am struggling to find any other "reputable looking" services.
 
you mean like Istock and shutterstock? I thought about it now and again but for the likes of me seems a waste of time and effort.

Try Zenfolio, my site is www.gcsportsphotos.co.uk browse to the Cricket gallery and thats set up for online sales, Its a US based hosting service but photos are ordered and processed inn the UK by Photobox, if you decide to sign up then contact me, its cheaper to sign up on the US site rather than the UK one and i can give you a code for a further 10% off

Hideously expensive though and not even unlimited storage, a half decent option if youre a full time pro earning a very good income but certainally not for the part timers amongst us, between £8 and £60 a month, no thanks.

fair point.. i was thinking we were talking about pros, but just noticed we are in the talk basics section.

i'm using photoshelter myself, which is about the same price but they take a percentage of your sales :(
if i could be bothered with the hassle of moving 1 gig of photos over to photodeck i would

How do they work? Are you giving up rights to the image or are they like single prints only? Should you stick (c) on it

Also I noticed this wil Zenfolio is that the basic / unlimited packages have no selling platforms.....how does this work?

You never lose your image rights, they are your images, i think some sharing sites like Flickr do say they are allowed to use them

Dont really understand the bit about the selling platform but the basic package does allow you to sell online

I suspect the OP was talking about stock photo companies, rather than hosted portfolio type sites.

If this is the case, have a google of iStock, shutterstock, Alamy, Getty and all things stock related.

Your both right :) I was looking for either, just wanna get some of my stuff out there and seen :) so I will look at those too

If you want to get your photos seen by the widest audience, then a stock photography company is going to be your best bet. Clients will use these sites for a lot of design, advertising. illustrative, website etc images. You won't make much off individual image sales, but as time goes by and you build up a library of shots and learn what sells, it should start to generate some income. You will need to submit a small set of images to make sure you can match the technical criteria that are set by the image library though. Accurate key-wording of your images is also vital to getting them to appear on searches.

Portfolio websites as mentioned above are, I think, better for advertising yourself as a photographer, selling individual prints, providing a place for clients of wedding/portrait/events photographers to host galleries for clients shoots. They don't tend to be searchable by tags and you will need to have some kind of SEO in place to try and appear close to the top of searches.

There may be mileage in both for you.

In my last year of college studying photography they encouraged us to put our work on a blog. At first I wasn't too sure and I thought it wouldn't really work out, but now I really enjoy putting my work on there. I think
It's a good way to start getting your work seen and the thing I like most is that you can see your views and where the people are that have viewed your page. It's not a blog to sell your work but I think it could really help you get out there.
I use blogspot, if you have a google email account you cab set it up with that address and password.
