Selling old or unused software ?

Yes
I hope this doesn't contravene any forum rules but I am wondering what people do with old software they no longer use.
I wouldn't mind having some HDR software and have trialed a couple but would only use it rarely so cannot justify nor afford to buy it new. A decent BW convertor would be good too but again, they seem expensive if only used rarely.
There seems to be a few on here who have gone off HDR or who upgrade to a newer version of whatever software, so what happens to the old or unused stuff.
Is it illegal to sell on ?
Surely it might even generate new sales if someone like me were able to buy it cheap as I may later want to upgrade ?

I am not talking about any sort of copied software - I am not smart enough to know how or what to do but rather like old mobile phones - what do people do with them ?

I use ACDSee to process my pictures but have 3 old versions that are no longer used and I have often thought that if I knew how to remove it and put it onto a cd it might be of use to someone who was just starting out as an introduction. If the old version is no longer available then is it wrong to do this ?
Please note that this is a genuine question - I do not know anything about copied or copying software nor am I after anything dodgy !

You can transfere the licence with some software (varies) usually the original owner has to un-instal and in some cases contact the original company.
The biggest issue you'll have is the one you've found already, if you don't have the disk it can be very tricky to use the software already on a computer to pass on, you really need the original install file and serial number if you bought a downloaded version.

Ahh, thanks for the replies - I do have some cd's and a couple have been upgrades.

However, one of my questions still remains slightly unclear in my mind (not sure I put it correctly though !)
What about a program that you may buy, use for a while and then decide that its not for you - I am guessing from what Wayne says that you could sell it on though it may be a hassle given what you get for it - right ?

id love to see a thread that lists free to download software as said not every 1 can afford to buy photoshop photomatix etc as there on a very very tight budget ,im using gimp, ufraw, picasa 3 ,dpp, paint net, there all free to download i would love to know what else is out there that could be of use to me

You can go here:

http://www.serif.com/free-photo-editing-software/

to download Serif Photo plus Starter Edition.

I have used their editing programs for about 10 years now and am signed up to receive any special offers.

You have to give an e-mail address and your name etc to get th free download which is about 130Mb but the release code comes with it so should be easy to set up to try out.

And their special offers are quite good - I'm still using PhotoPlus X2 which was on sale originally for about £75.00 but which eventually filtered down to me for about £12.00 (including a very well printed A5 booklet).

Or you can also try Photoscape which is also quite good but without as much functionality as the Serif products.
