The later variants of the X100 have better IQ. The S and the T share a sensor though. If you'll come get it you're welcome to borrow my X100s for a while to see if its an option you can live with.....ps Don't blame you for wanting to ditch the Canon stuff. I'll give you 50p and I'm being ripped off ;)
 
Most of the time I'm out with my camera (not often enough) I take just the camera and one lens and at the moment my choice is my A7 with 35mm f2.8 or GX7 with 17mm f1.8. They're very similar but just different enough to give some interest.

Although I most often take just one lens (on the camera) I occasionally take another one or two in the bag and I do like a change and for those reasons nice though fixed lens cameras are I know I'd much prefer the option of changing the lens.

Good luck with it if you go for the Q Dan but I personally wouldn't throw that much money into a one lens camera and although I do appreciate that you're looking for AF with traditional MF abilities and markings the way I'd go is an A7 with a small number of manual and AF lenses (28 or 35, 50 and 85mm MF? 35 or 50mm AF?) with the MF lenses being for fun and luxury and an AF lens or two in reserve for when you want the their abilities.
 
x1 camera x1 lens has worked a treat for me - but then im settled on the type of photography I want to do.. really glad I don't have the whole dilemma of what lens(es) to take out every time and the whole GAS thing of changing/upgrading lens all the time..

Obviously doesn't work for everyone but for me with my street photography/street art then the X100T has been superb :D
 
I can certainly see the appeal here. I have pretty much sold out of Canon for Sony earlier this year and although I have a couple of lenses The A7 and CV40 does 98% of the work - I could manage with just that. I have a Leica Tele Elmarit 90/2.8 and the FE35 for autofocus when out with the kids as they struggle with manual focus at their age ;)
 
Looks like I won't be ducking out of weddings completely, I've been asked to second shoot next year - now they know I'm selling most of my stuff, they will supplement whatever I'm missing for the weddings. Cool :)

Dan, it sounds to me like you are doing this for personal reasons rather than business ones (i.e. to enjoy your photography more). If that is the case, then go for it! I'm sorry i can't offer any similar experiences, but I will say I have been downsizing my kit (including camera body) and now carry it around with me far more than I used to. There are some compromises, mainly in camera performance, but I'm now concentrating on what I can do, rather than what my kit can do (if that makes sense).

If you want a Leica, go for it! It sounds like it's within your budget and there's no doubting they are beautifully built machines, and hopefully you'll get great satisfaction from using it. It should retain it's value quite well too (I don't know but it might actually be a better investment than some of the other brands because of the associated name). I don't see it as being any different than someone wanting to own a Ferrari all their life. If the opportunity arises then do it. You may live to regret it, but if you manage to get through life without any regrets you're probably not playing properly.

The single lens thing, I'm not sure I'd be able to do it, but I shoot a wide variety of subjects, and often at the "extremes". If you are mainly interested in "street" a single focal length is a perfectly valid option.

If I was you I'd sell up, get myself the Leica and lens and start using them. I'd probably wait a few months just to be sure, and then decide if I needed to reinvest the remaining money to start buying all my old gear back, or use it to help fund the travel costs for me and my Leica.

The more I think about it the more I want it, it is a fixed lens camera.

No option to buy additional lenses for it too :) so I can focus on what I have..

Because there are so many people on here, what if you could meet up with some of them and they would be kind enough to let you try the gear you are thinking of buying. I'm sure someone will have it. Then you could have a few hours with trying their gear. Save a costly mistake.

Probably wise words ;) I still have the option to go to the Leica shop in London to test it out, probably easier for me.
 
Maybe he's getting a referral discount and has just come here to give us all Leica GAS. ;)
 
Damn it Dan... I want all your Canon camera kit... can't afford it though :(.... I would say you seem to have made up your mind, though recent works have been great including studio portraits.

Sorry but typical review,drop a few names in here :D,but at the end of the day the camera has to work for you,and what you want to do with it,not what so and so uses,if you think that's the way you like to go with your photographer,then go for it :)

Don't get me wrong, the review was just one of those laid out for easy digestion to understand it's features, I don't know who Kristian Dowling is.

As far as I can tell It's the camera I've been waiting for to supersede the RX1R :D

I've been reading up on the Leica Q and finding myself more interested than I though I'd be and the attraction for me is the old style experience with shutter and aperture dials and (what I hope is) a non fly by wire lens... but... I've just read on DPR that the Q's EVF is a field sequential display and I have one of those on my Panasonic GX7 and I hate it, in fact I think it ruins the camera.

Some people describe a rainbow or tearing effect in the GX7's EVF but that's not how I'd describe what I see, I think I'm seeing a result of the field sequential technology as it's certainly different to any other EVF I've ever used and what I see I'd describe as a general shimmering fuzziness. It really spoils the camera for me, I don't like using it and I much prefer my older Panasonic G1's display or the one on my A7 which IMO is very good,

If you are seriously interested in the Q I recommend you spend as long as possible road testing the EVF as if it is like the one on my GX7 and if you see what I see you may just hate it.
 
Talking about EVFs : you really need to use it, and have used other EVFs to compare and get an idea of which type suits your own eyes.
It is absolutely not about which is best on paper, or biggest, or using which type of pixel.
It is an individual thing.
If the Q's EVF suits you the camera seems like a 'better' RX1 so go for it.
Hey, it's not really Leica silly prices, more like Sony.
 
To tell the truth I have used a lot of EVF now,some are better than others but they have all been usable,and not had many problems with the new generation of EVF :)
 
The whole point of Leica is to use their lovely glass, so why limit yourself to a 28mm? I'd rather get a A7R I or II and some nice small M mount glass or get an M9 and 35mm or 50mm and do the classic Leica experience.
 
the built in lens on the q has much more distortion than an M lens and has to be digitally corrected so i think standalone lenses are better quality wise
 
Whilst I love the Leica Glass, for it's small size and quality, I do still want AF.

The interchangeable bodies will probably tempt me to spend a fortune on Leica glass too :D

Oh and generally Leica lens <50mm don't play well on A7 bodies, edge smearing and such.

All I'm looking for is a compact 35mm lens and camera combo

So far I've tried
Sony 28mm, which I loved size wise but it was a bit plasticky and I really notice the difference between 28 and 35 (strong preference towards 35), and ultimately that also put the leica q out of my acquisition list (which sucks as I thought that was the answer...)

Haven't tried an rx1 but no viewfinder and ropy af, can see myself not getting on with it

Manual focus 35mm lenses- still not 100% sure about manual focus, even with peaking it's just not accurate enough IME

Sony 35 1.4, lovely lens, and I still use it for work, but it's heavy and big


So as I'm dead set on 35mm the options are:

6d with 35 f2 (the older one)
A7 with 35 2.8
A7rii with canon 35 f2 (the new one, as I don't think the old one will focus on the a7rii)

Want the leica q, but just couldn't get on with 28mm focal length
Hell maybe I could get on with it, that and the new macbook...

@dancook I think it is an excellent idea. I've only been once on a walkabout with you but I think it suits your style perfectly. Go for it, clear out what you you don't want and get what you want.

I like the idea of a Q as well.
