Yes
I need some advice with selling photos. A couple of drivers from a rally have asked how much do I charge :help:

I dont want to get involved sending out prints, so was thinking of offering a 1024 wide file @ £3 and a 3400 approx wide file @ £5 - what do you think?

Also should the copyright watermark be removed?

If you are buying a Shot then i would expect it to have no copy right watermark. You put one on to stop it being stolen, so if someone is buying it then there should be no copyright sign

I would sell the prints not the files as then you have no repeat business they will be able to print more them selves....

If you want to make cash do the prints if you want to give images away for free sell the files..

But that is just my view...

It depends what you want from the process,

Yes, if you sell the photos you should remove the copyright watermark.
A good way of selling (one that I use) is through Photobox. I have a pro gallery (which is free). All you need to then do is upload the file, set the prices and customers can select, order and pay for the photo through photobox (they take a percentage) and the photo is sent directly to them.

Yeh I looked into this - unfortunately Photobox aren't accepting new PRO accounts (from the Photobox website):

Following in the footsteps of our new website, the Pro Gallery service will also be updated later in the year. We are currently considering various ways to enhance this service and will definitely be offering a new and improved version in the future.

In the meantime it will remain on the old site. So for existing Pro Gallery owners and customers it’s business as usual. However, we are no longer accepting new Pro Gallery accounts until the service is launched on the new site.

You can access all your Pro Gallery albums from the new site by clicking ‘My Pro Gallery Admin’ below. From there you can continue to upload photos to existing Pro Gallery albums, create new Pro Gallery albums and all the main admin tasks you have been used to.

Please note: access to the Pro Gallery old site is now purely for Pro Gallery and Old Creation reordering purposes only. For everything else you will be using the new site.

Thing is though that having bought the shot once they're not going to buy it again anyway, 99 times out of a 100 you'd be as well deleting it once it's sold. There's a lot to be said for providing images electronically, far less hassle than prints.

If you are selling a file you should state that due to discrepancies between monitors, the image may print out differently to how it appears on the screen and then mention your own monitor and print calibration technique - otherwise you may get complaints that 'it looks funny'

Ah...I didn't realise.

How about Using Photobox anyway...take the money from the people who want prints and then order them as a gift and send them to the customers directly? It's a touch more hassle but you're still not having to print or send the pictures.

It seems a bit cheap to me.

Isn't it like selling a trannie with all rights? :)

which rights for transvestites are we talking about?

Sorry couldn't resist:coat:

Thanks for taking the time to comment guys.
It sounds cheap to me also but considering the alternative is for the file to sit on my hard disk for the rest of its life. It is just a token that I am looking for rather than giving it away for free.

A triathlon I recently did, you could buy an 'emailable' or 'printable' size copy of the image for £6 or £18 respectively. The emailable ones were 1000pixels on the longest side, not sure what size the printable ones were.

Certainly no copyright logos on them - would have been pretty peeved if there had been!

Take a look at the link below, from a well respected rally photographers website.

His prices are pretty much the norm for rally photography.

http://www.rallyaction.co.uk/2008/ROM/slides/08ROM_001_039.html

As for the price of digital images, for one image at 900 pixels wide he charges £5 but will also do a disc of 5+ pictures from that event of that crew for £25.

A full size image is also available at his own discretion, if he has a repetative customer then obviously the prices are adjusted.

How many images would Stuart (or any other official tog) sell at that price on a regular basis R-M?
What is your view on what I am suggesting?

Stu probably sells more prints and images than anybody else.

There are no guarantees to what you will sell from one event to the next, all depends on the entry list and who has the cash I suppose and also what your photo's come out like, dependant on your location.

You will find you will do more events with no sale than one's with sales. As an official tog for an event you obviously have a better chance of selling than just being 'another' signed on tog.

I have worked with or for Stu on events previously, last years Rally of the Midlands was quite successful with £500+ in sales, according to Stu this year has been dire. I covered the Woodpecker for him last year (as I was going anyway and Stu had injured his leg) and had about £150's worth of sales.

I used to sell pics for myself and got sick of the 24/7 of taking pics/sorting website/sorting proofs/cashing cheques/fetching prints/posting prints/taking pics/sorting website/sorting proofs/cashing cheques/fetching prints/posting prints..................etc etc.. whilst still holding down a 50+ hour a week full time job.

The better half had also had enough of it too.

Selling images is alot easier than having prints done and posting out.

I would look at selling a 900 pixel wide image for about £5 by email. A full sized image would need to be at least 3 times that as they have endless usage of that image.

I now only take photographs for my own usage, for supplying to newspapers that go with my own editorials, or supplied to my clients as part of their PR /website package.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Marcos (macjam off BR)

I go to rallies\hillclimbs etc take a few shots, put a few up on forums - end of. Because thats what I enjoy, if I had to be there at 7am stay until 7pm and take 30 shots of each car I wouldn't enjoy that, unless it was my living.
I certainly dont want to put anyone who does that out of business by offering my stuff for free but dont feel it necessary to charge 'top wack' because I dont use 'pro gear'. Does that make sense?:D

Cheers
