Really can't understand this, which has just been noticed, what is the benefit to buying it
It's a very steep bank and part of a tarmac public footpath to maintain

Parking spaces are worth a fortune in certain parts of the South - a 16 x 8 garage would sell for +£40k down here in Winchester ............. so the value depends on what the planning guys say you can do with the land, and there are (always) plenty of "brown" envelopes floating around!!!

You'd only get one car on that, on the the small triangle bit rest is steep banks which would need serious shoring up if dug out.
Plus the road that runs down the RH side is a busy main road so doubt you'd get permission anyway

I suspect there is very little benefit to buying it, it's more that the council or whoever owns it doesn't want the cost of maintaining it anymore. The adjacent houses will probably buy it so that they can keep it tidy.

I suspect this is most likely the case. We had a similar thing with a 5m x 100m’ish strip of land on the edge of one of our fields. All it was really wide enough to do was fly tip etc so we ended up buying it to fence off and plant with trees purely to prevent problems in the future :)

There was a similar area at the top of the road - the council wanted to get rid of any responsibility so circulated the neighbourhood with a leaflet telling us that it was up for auction. They then gave the residents' association (didn't know we had one!) the money to buy it.

Yeah, if I owned one of those houses I'd probably buy it (or get together with the other houses to do so). Then nobody else can build on it.

Right now in Folkestone we have a local businessman building flats on a bit of the beach that you would never imagine you can build on. But it's his so he can even though it massively affects the sea views of other properties.

Sometimes small strips of land can become very important (Often referred to as ransom strips) we have one at the bottom of our road, (about the size of two cars) it stopped the new adjacent housing estate connecting to our road. All the new estate traffic enters and exit at one point.
A lot safer as they have to slow to leave, had they just gone into the new estate from our road, they would be doing so rather quickly (straight road)

I know that place, I would NOT want to live there being such an exposed location with the prevailing wind and tidal surges.

Back to about this thread topic, there is a council owned grass verge right in front of my house and I wouldn't mind buying it up. First thing I'd do is to get rid of the rotting rowan tree and then maintain it regularly with lawn mowing, I'd do a better job than our beloved council. Trouble is, I'll be constantly shouting at people to "geeeeerrrrrrrt orrrrrrf mioooo laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand!!", not to mention literally half the town emptying their dogs on there.

Sometimes there’s a right of way ‘opportunity on these little bits, doesn’t look like that there. Those houses depend on that bank being sound I guess so there may be some advantage to a buyer ;(.

If I'm reading it correctly, it was up for auction last Tuesday, and nobody bought it (or at least, nobody was prepared to pay £5K+ for it).

This sort of thing is not uncommon and is strongly linked to both greed and selfishness. On my estate the many verges and open areas were adopted by the county council as public amenity areas, roads and foot paths. However the CC did not acquire the land. The estate was built in the early 70's and the builder held on to this land. In 2014 he died and his family sold the land at auction but this time a land speculator bought it. An investigation by our local Councillor stated that it would not be possible for anyone to do anything with the land without a stopping order which he felt this would be very unlikely. We all then relaxed until a few weeks ago when two of the houses submitted planning applications to fence in part of this land at the end of their gardens. This would turn a pleasant rural walk into an alleyway hence the selfish. On the other hand this is for large detached houses with already large gardens and will expand their gardens by less than 5%. I and a few other have strongly objected so at the least it will go to the planning Committee where several Councillors are minded to refuse. However, it appears that it is not just a planning issue so may be parked anyway. I hope to know the outcome soon. Unfortunately, the diluting of planning controls by David Cameron has resulted in many unsuitable planning applications going through and Councils are reluctant to take a tough stance as the Government appeal may reverse the decision. So if this is in your area be very alert or you will lose your local amenities.

Dave

you have a right to object to any p;lanning application in writing . The application should be on the internet and space or where/how to lodge an objection. I suggest your neighbours do this as well which should block the application
