Hi all,
First off, I hope this is the right forum to post this in as I have no photos to share
I am in no way a "Pro" and have little to no interest in doing photography as a living, it's just a hobby. But....
I am doing a shoot with a friend this Sat who wants to become a glamour model, as a rule I am more into "Art Nude" but I am happy to take photos of anyone willing to step in front of the camera (need all the practice I can get ).

I guess the first step for her is to get her photo in a mag or news paper
Would she normal have to do this or is it up to the tog to sell/give the image to a mag.

Any advice anyone could offer would be a great help.

Ok great, Like I say, I have no interest in getting them published but she asked me if I knew what her first step would be so thought I would ask.

Do you have any experiance of doing that?
Do you just send them images to the mag editor and wait and see?

I *think*, based on nothing at all, that unlike other applications, the model would submit the images herself. I think the model would pay the photographer for her shoot, and then the magazine pays the model. The magazines wouldn't deal with the photographer, probably because they'd be inundated with guys wanting to take pictures of naked girls.

I think I've got a glamour shoot in a few weeks :)

Great advice Spike, cheers.
Well I am doing the shoot for free because it's good practice, but I guess if she does get any of the shots in a mag, that would be good for my portfolio.

I've sent images to magazines before, but not been successful with them. That's non glamour though, so not sure if there's a difference.

Look up the editor on the magazine website, there should be contact details, or call their main office and explain what you are after and ask who to speak to.

My pleasure, and that's the same as I'm doing :)

It's not really my neck of the woods but a fairly normal path would be model gets portfolio shot, takes portfolio to modeling agencies, gets taken on if she/he are right for the market, end clients go to agencies to get models.

There are times where if an agency likes a model, they may pay for some more shots, better tailored to the market they serve.

Thanks very much for the advice all.
Really appreciate it.

I had some (unwanted) advice from another tog ages ago (not on this forum, a tog who's studio I rented once).
He said he made his money by paying for models then selling the photos?

he made his money by paying for models then selling the photos?

I suppose that must happen. I'm just too pure and sheltered I guess, in my world the idea for a shot comes first, then if you need a model you go to an agency to get one. If you have a mag that just shows pics of girls with no clothes on, then why not buy them ready made, it would be easier and cheaper.

To be honest, I didn't pay that much attention to the guy, he was a slimy fella that was all over the model I had taken with me (my other half), we both felt so uncomfortable we left before our time was up.

I was just curious I guess.
I have passed all your advice on to the girl in question and she is now on the hunt for editor contact details.

Cheers folk

There are two distinct business models (pun intended)

1 tog hires model and sells photos
2 model hires tog and sells photos

Abi Titmuss is 2 and retains copyright, hires everything and controls everything .

Cheers andrewc,
Is it the same path for both?

Model/Tog contactes mag editor... He/She likes them and buys them?

If she wants to do it for a living she could do worse that get on model.net too.

I have just had a "Google" on the subject at it seems to be what I thought and what dazzajl said earlier on in the thread.

Looks like when Togs get published, they do it as a portfolio builder.

I would imagine so. There was a bit on tv the other day about how titmuss was doing it differently to most. Dating alleged rapist John Leslie launched her but she's made a fortune. Obviously quite a smart lass.

That sounds like it would have been an interesting watch!
Any chance it was on the BBC and I will look for it on the iPlayer
