I'm soon to sell my D80+18-135 lens, and replacing it with a D300 + ??? Lens.

Has anyone got a good suggestion for a decent lens to complement the D300.
I will be keeping my Sigma 10-20 & Nikkor 70-300.

Any ideas please..

Depends on your budget, but the Nikon 18-70 is a good price and was always well regarded. It came as a kit lens on my D70s, I miss it ( I might be getting another one soon if I can bear to sell my 18-200VR)
Sigma also do a 24-70 f2.8 which I know gets good reviews, or if you want VR, have a look at the Nikon 16-85 VR.

Difficult without a budget but Tokina do a 11-16mm F2.8 wide angle for £339 inc vat at microglobe.

Like PsiFox says, bit hard without a budget, but the D300 will highlight the deficiences of the 70-300 (you don't say if it's a vr). It's a false economy to use cheap glass on a semi-pro or pro body,if you can afford it then start looking at f/2.8 and faster glass. The camera will thank you for it ;)

If you want to invest in lenses then a choice I would be looking at is the Nikkor 17-55 2.8 and the 70-200 or 80-200 2.8

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that am hoping to have a possible budget of £250-£350.
The Nikkor 17-55 or possibly the 18-70, sound interesting, no point in the Tokina 11-16 as i already have the 10-20 sigma.

My 70-300 VR works well with my D80 and so would hope it will work along with the D300..

Any other suggestions vey welcome, just need to to a small list of lenses in order to try them out on my visit when making a purchase on the D300.

Thanks

Sounds like your covered then with a wide angle and long zoom, just a case of getting a mid zoom lens. Many people will say the 18-70 lens is great for the price which is what I have atm, but the 17-55 is in a different league. The 70-300 will also work fine on a D300.

you won't get the 17-55 2.8 for your budget even secondhand.

I just got a used but immaculate one for £550.

Prior to that though the 18-70 was on the camera out of the bag every time.

I would say that given your budget you are going to be limited to a consumer lens and one of the best of the bunch is the 18-70 (definate improvement on the 18-135 - I should know). You also have the option of the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 which would compliment the 10-20 nicely and is an f2.8 throughout.

Though I struggle to understand why you are upgrading to a D300 (~£1000) rather than spending that money on some pro quality lenses e.g. the 17-55mm (or perhaps the stunning Nikon 24-70 f2.8 which is also full frame compatible) and sticking with your D80 for a little bit longer. If you want a Semi-Pro spec SLR then you may be able to find a D200 for about £400 (just a little over your lens budget).

Just my 2p worth.

Thanks for the reply Simon, certainly makes sense in what you are saying, however i have read that the D300 improves lens quality and auto speed among other advantages which rises above the D80 & D200, having said that after reading your reply it has made me rethink about the issue, perhaps a better quality lens over the 18-135, it has taken me a while to realise that the 18-135 is not giving me the quality i would expect, although quite a nice lens there are many other lenses that will give better and sharper performance.....

I can get the D300 for £850 localy, perhaps i should be looking at a combination with a decent lens. um, got me thinking now......

That seems right and has been documented several times. I have the Nikkor 70-300VR, I dont think you will go wrong with that one. I also have an 18-200VR and although it was always good ( on D50 D70s D80 and D200) on the D300 it is so much better and feels a totally different lens. Your 10-20 Sigma should be great on a D300 too.

How about taking your 18-135 into Jessops and asking to put it on a D300 body. Take a few shots on your own card (CF) and have a look at them at your leisure, see if you still get a quality issue, but honestly, you dont need the 135 if you have the 70-300.

I would get the D300, keep your two lenses and spend the £250 on a mid range zoom, plenty of suggestions above.

Thanks Allan.
Your suggestion of taking it along to try it on the D300 is a good one, I will follow your advise and see how it turns out, it may well be the way i will make up my mind..

regards..

Your 18-135 should still fetch a good price on Ebay, I know when I sold mine I got something daft like £175 for it :bonk:

Would the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S DX be of interest? I've got it on loan from a pro who wants to sell it soon (could be looking at almost 1/2 price and it's about 3 months old), just waiting for the final ok to go ahead. He's got a D3 so it's not much good for him.
