Ok following on from this thread, once the website is finished I know quite a few people want images from the day and so I am going to see about selling a few prints.

Thing is I have no real idea about how to go about it. I was thinking something along the lines of 2 different sized prints, 12x8 and 9x6 and jpeg files. And pricing wise what is the going rate for things like that (as I have no clue), I was thinking £10 for 12x8, £5 for 9x6 and £4 for the jpeg file, does that sound about right or too expensive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Personally I don't sell the JPEG files any more. There's less control over them once you've emailed them and not enough profit in them. That's just my view and I know plenty of others who do sell the files. 9x6 is a bit of an odd size I think. It keeps the aspect ration of the shot (unless you shoot Oly) but I've never seen a frame that size. I'd probably offer 8x6 instead and perhaps a 6x4 too. Prices seem okay but make sure there's still some profit in it if you're having them printed by a lab like photobox. When I use them I have the prints sent to me for checking and so I can remove the receipt that comes with it. Then the image is bagged and put into a card backed envelope before posting out to the client. It all eats into your profit but it's better than them seeing what you pais for the print and who you use.

I charge slightly more and don't bother with the jpegs either, simply because I want to sell large prints which are more profitable. If you're going to be showing these on a website make sure you've got a shopping cart or upload an order form which people can use.

Thanks for the replies. :)

Looking at your site dod has helped me a lot, as it's the first sit I have actually seen that is doing a similar thing to what I want to do. I hope thats ok?:)

Payment wise I will be using Gallery 2 for the software so was wondering about paypal. I noticed you had that dod, is it easy to sort out and use? The other option I was wondering about was getting people to tell their club instructor what they wanted and pay them the cash, then sending the photos back through them, but thinking about it, it's probably not a good idea as things could quite easily be lost and forgotten that way. Although I may still send the photos back through the clubs instead of posting them, depending on what the instructors think of it.

Whereabouts do you get your card backed envelopes form Kev, and how much do they cost?

Thanks:)

WHSmiths I think. It's about £5 for 10, you can get them slightly cheaper shopping around online but generaly you need to order in bigger numbers than I want sitting around the house.

I charge more as well but I'm still slightly cheaper than most of the guys round here, have a look at my site to get an idea.

This link might help as well.

For your card backed envelopes try the stationary cupboard at work. :naughty: :D

As far as paypal's concerned it's fairly easy to add in, go onto the payppal site and they'll give you the code and instructions on how to include it. If I can manage, anyone can. If you get stuck PM me and I'll copy one of the templates I have to let you see it working :)

Alternatively have a look at http://www.eostemplate.com/eos/index.html very pro looking and works with a few different galleries. You have to pay for it though. Only thing stopping me doing it is the thought of going and uploading all those images again :(

Thanks, thats given me a few ideas too.:)

I read your tutorial a couple of weeks ago and have to say it a superb guide and really has helped!

As for aquiring the envelopes from work, I'm a sponging student so don't work.

I am using Gallery 2 and am hopefully going to stick a paypal add on bit in for payments.:)

Ok I have the site up and running (I think :D), payment via paypal, so all I need to do now is remember to turn sandbox off before I give people the address!

I have one more question, how do you send you photos, do you do it recorded or just standard first and second class?

I send mine first class and get a receipt of postage.

First class, a card backed A4 sized envelope will cost 48p (I think) to post so you need to factor in that cost as well as your print price, Paypal fees, envelopes etc.

Standard post is normally fine. I've had one go missing in the last 18 months.

Hacker makes a good point of factoring in all the costs before you set your selling price :)

When you're working out your prices remember to factor paying postage on individual prints. So if you order one print from photobox it's £1.50 postage. If you order more at a time that's a bonus but don't count on being able to do that when you're working things out.

Cool, thanks. I am going to stick a £2 postage charge for each order which will cover the packaging and postage costs and the charges for prints will cover single postage from photobox, I may even get them done at my local kodak place which is good and resonably cheap (haven't checked the prices yet) which will reduce postage costs too.

Just to check I have everything factored in, costs will be; printing, posting to me, paypal fee, envelope, postage to them. Anything I missed out?

Thanks for all your help, it has been superb as usual.:)
