hi
if "all" goes well, plan to sell my mint D40 body [>1200 clicks] with all the bits

A..sell D40 body alone + all accessories

B..purchase a cheap AF-S kit lens [£50?] and sell as complete starter pack

which would be more marketable ?.....thanks

It doesn't often pay to buy something to help sell something else. I would just advertise the body.

If your selling it here wouldn't most people have a lens already?

stick the body up with the price you want and see what happens, if it doesn't sell then consider buying the lens.

perhaps not, as this model is aimed at getting people into DSLR - but you could be right....

A D40 is an entry level camera, aimed at beginners. A cheap kit lens would probably make the camera more attractive and easier to sell.

If it was higher up the Nikon food chain, then selling body only has a stronger argument as people may well be upgrading bodies.

my thinking too ATM as I can offer a complete starter kit c/w bag

I would guess 99% of people looking for a d40 would be dslr newbies, I like most people want to play with new toys straight away so lens, mem card and charged battrey will all be good selling points.

Exactly.

Some beginners will want everything to get them started, so camera, lens, a bag and a memory card.

Others, who may be a bit more savvy, may prefer to buy bits and pieces here and their, or may have a film SLR lurking in the cupboard with some lenses.

You can't please everyone, but I think more beginners would prefer a kit.

:lol: battery charged in 90 mins - you ARE impatient!:)
thanks

I'm in the same position with a D60 and have offered body only which is my prefered option and a kit including rucksack/lens/card etc. I've just had an offer for the body only so

I've only kept the kit lens because I don't have anything else in that focal range but I'm looking to get a Tamrom 17-50 2.8 then the kit lens can be sold on.

It depends on the target your wanting to buy your camera, the d40 is the nikon entry level I believe so your aiming at a first time DSLR user in which case the buyer will want a lens.

I do agree though that spending money on something to sell it is usually not a good way to make or save money but it usually make the item more appealing and more saleable. Selling on here you are selling to DSLR owners so a body would sell but on ebay you would sell an body with lens easier.

EDIT: I started typeing this ages ago then got distracted and came back looks like everyone thinks the same.

what kit lens you got......:naughty:

my dilemma........

dont have a kit lens for D40 - so have to buy one @ £40 eBay
then I am locked into complete sale only

ok - looking at all the above comments
1...body for sale first
2.. NO offers - then buy a lens

THANKS to all - quick replies...

thanks Little John
wont sell on eBay -- and had only considered selling here from the start
had lotsa good trading here, so why not return the favour..?

watch out for a mint D40.....

I think it all comes down to money John, i just sold my D60 for £165 to be picked up. My kit lens is the 18-55 non vr but I need to shift my Tamron macro lens before I can start hunting down the 17-50 2.8 and only then I'm in a position to shift the kit lens ;)

I shall be lurking in the wings.......:D

I would say yes it would make it more attractive to someone just starting out - complete kit is a lot easier than having to buy things seperately when you don't really know what you are talking about (lens wise). I'd give it a go on it's on first though and see what kind of interest there is
