sell the canon 500d for a 50d or 7d. also which 200mm lens?

Hi,

I currently have the Canon 500d. Although a great camera, I don't really like the usability of it in terms of no dial or top screen. I don't really use the video so can easily do without it and want more fps for sports shooting.


Now should I sell my canon 500d for about 450 on ebay then buy a secondhand canon 50d or 7d. Saw the 50d secondhand on here for 480. Is it worth paying the extra 400-500 for a canon 7d? I am very tempted by the 19 point af.
What does everyone think?

Also lenses. I want to get a telephot for surf photography and portraits. Was thinking 70-200mm f/2.8 is, or fixed 200mm f/2.8 II?

So, would it be better to get the canon 50d with the 70-200mm, or 7d with the 200mm fixed?
 
You're not going to get much use out of a 200mm prime on a crop sensor for portraits, it should do the job fine for surfing though. It's a very sharp lens wide open, especially in comparison to the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS MKi

The 50D+200mm will be half the price of a 7D+70-200mm. If you've got the money and need the higher FPS rate & would make more use out of the better AF points/metering system then definitely go for the 7D, but if spending all that money on the 7D means you may have to compromise on the lens and not purchase the one you'd wish to then I'd personally go for the cheaper body and better lens.
 
I wouldn't have thought a 200mm will be long enough for most surfing if your shooting from the shore?

I think your probably better off with a 50D and investing the extra money in glass than a 7d.
 
As guybrush has suggested, I would like to emphasize that 200mm for portraits, on a cropper, is a little bit over enthusiastic. you'd have to be standing half a mile away :lol:
 
Yeah I've already got a 50mm 1.8 I use for portraits just wanted a telephoto to use for now sports shots as well, hence the 2.8 aperture. Was thinking about getting a 1.4x converter with those lenses as well.
If I get the 50d cheap it will only cost me another 100 quid over the 500d which is a bargain I recon!
