So, to start off, I'm terrible at self portraits. I don't think it's so much my skill as a photographer, more my inability to pull a face that looks anything other than gourmless when being photographed!

So I'm going to try and take a self portrait later tonight at the promenade as the sun sets, involving my D90 and probably my 18-55mm VR kit lens, and a remote flash too just in case. Of course I'll have my tripod and remote trigger too :)

So does anyone have any tips on a good self portrait? I think I'm going to try looking off camera into the distance, to make it look a bit moody and such. I've even shaved, and ironed a shirt and trousers. Effort! Shirt sleeves rolled up or as is?

Thanks for any input everyone!

I find em really hard too! Wish you luck! (not very helpful I know).

I found that the live view screen is very usefull for self portraits.

There's a whopping great thread of SP's on here from a couple of months ago. Have a look through that for some inspiration.

If you are going to smile for the self portrait then do it with your mouth slightly open and teeth showing. That's the difference between a fake and real smile.

If you are going to feign looking into the distance, don't just pretend, actually look at something. It will give your whole face a natural look as the muscles will be performing as they normally do.

Pretty much everyone thinks they look weird in photos, so don't worry, just compose the shots as you would for anyone and shoot it as normal!
