Selective sharpening through layers - Elements 5

In the same way that you can dodge and burn by creating a layer of 50% grey and using brushes, can you do the same with a new layer and apply a sharpening mask then brush through areas? Would the layer need to be grey or blank?

I'm not sure I've made myself clear, basically what I want to do (within Elements 5) is selevtively sharpen of certain areas of a photo and it would be easier for me if I could do this with a brush.

Any instruction would be gratefully received :)
 
Hey I've literally "just" been trying that in gimp, another step on my learning curve ?

I used a 50% grey brush/bucket at 100% opacity on the areas I didn't want sharpening. I selected the grey sharpening layer so I was applying it to that layer, but also made the full colour layer below it visible so I could see where I was going and the result.

am I making sense so far? trouble was it destroyed the sharpening layer

OK, so now the next thing to try is keep the full grey sharpening layer, apply a 50% grey to a new layer above it and erase the bits I want to be sharp, that way I can adjust the areas without destroying the sharpening data layer . . . errr , it makes some sense to me, got to go try it

does anybody KNOW what to do?

that didn't work :bang:, a layer of 50% grey and alpha to select the sharpening areas, tried all sorts of layer modes with it above and below the sharpening layer

:thinking: time to hit the search button again, its really too early for a beer
 
Thank you for your obvious efforts to answer my question and for finding the link. I'm going to go through the whole thing later on and see if I can find the answers, it certainly looks very comprehensive :thumbs:

ok there is a mask command on the layer menu, it creates a second version of the layer on the same layer in plain black or white that you can paint in (black or white) to do the masking bit . . . wicked

must go celebrate with a beer
