Saw a few shots with selective colouring used in them and was wondering what is it and how do you do it? I have had a look about but cant find anything about it:bang:,no doubt it will be right in front of me so if any of you kind folk out there can point me in the right direction.

to put it in a simple way, use 2 layers 1 colour, 1 black and white, in photoshop have the black and white as the top layer, then use the eraser to remove where you want teh colour to come through.

To put it simply Don't do it TOO TACKY. Works in certain situations but not many

I HAVE seen it done well. A portrait of a little boy where only his blue jeans had colour. So it can work but that shot of wedding flowers in colour is so cliche'd it has become the epitome of bad taste.

You can also do it as a preset in ACR and run it as a batch just using channels. :)

can it be done in lightroom?

Sure can, desaturate the image with the saturation slider, then paint back colour with the adjustment brush set to + saturation.

Or much easier leave the global saturation alone and take the hue/sat saturation sliders all down then drag back (or leave) the colour you want, saves painting it back in.

You could also make a selection of the bit you want in colour....invert selection and lower sat

I would disagree that it is tacky - it is just a phase that many photographers go through when they start editing images as it is one of the more straight forward things to do (usually) and sometimes overdo it, then they move on to other things, clients on the other hand will often rarely if ever have seen it and want their pictures treated in this way.

I tend to use Wayne's method - usually for reducing the background when I don't want them so intrusive but works well for spot colour as well.

Thanks for the help peeps I didnt think it was used that much as the only time I have saw it other than her was in the flim Schindler's List which I thought was well done. So now I will go and mess up some pictures  again thanks for all the help:thumbs:
