I'm not happy with the 9 AF selection points on my 5D, and was wondering if anyone can offer me some tips. I've just moved over from a 400D and was expecting something 'better', but for my money the system is actually worse. I used to be able to change the AF point without taking the camera away from my eye on the 400D. In fact, I could do it blindfolded! The problems on the 5D are twofold...
1. I am struggling to use the multi-controller to select the points on the diagonals (2, 5, 8 and 11 o'clock positions). And can't seem to work out how I select them using the main-dial as the manual says I can.
2. The points all seem very bunched together in the centre of the frame. If I was just out for a walk or generally shooting with the 400D, I would keep one of the outer AF points selected. These are almost on a third, so it was easy for me to bring the camera up, position subject on a third, and shoot. Knowing the AF point would focus on the face of the subject. With the 5D, because the points are all quite centralised I seem to be having to select one (a rather drawn out process in itself because of point 1), focus, recompose, shoot. There is basically, no point that sits on the horizontal/vertical third.
