Hi all,

took a shot this afternoon of a model with blonde hair on a background which has come up grey as I was using both of my lights to light the model. Usually if I want to brighten the background I make a rough selection of the person and use refine edge to get an accurate selection of their hair, works great with most hair but it's going crazy with this image and creating big blotches and smudges in her hair. This is the image in question:

A solution for this and even an example on this pic would be awesome :)

Thanks in advance

You might want to try Mask Pro from On One Software. It's a Photoshop plug in. I used it a couple of years ago and it worked reasonably well. There is a 30 day trial so you can try it out. They used to do some video tutorials as well which make things easier to learn

Instead of selecting the model, could you perhaps select the grey background with the magic wand tool? re trying and reducing the Tolerance down and down until it seems about right? Refine edge, then invert your selection.

Just a thought. I am a n00b so could be talking rubbish.

You'll need to use channels to make your masks. This guy covers it pretty well... I'm guessing the Calculations method won't work with your image so skip to about 12mins on the video to use the LAB colour mode method.

channels, levels and lab is pretty much the only way to go with this, should only take you about 10-15 mins.
