Sekonic L-478-DR

Yeah, I called them today. The product video is very misleading.

Interestingly, during the call the tech support guy let slip that a Sekonic product for Elinchrom might be on the way and denied it later in the conversation.

If they were to bring out a 478-DR for Elinchrom I'd buy one right away, it would be awesome.

Watch this space.

I'm still surprised no one has tackled this issue, I seem to recall Gossen Digisky has some kind of Skyport emulation by why is no one else supporting it? Sekonic went to the trouble of designing a modular system why not update it to handle the major brands?

Only explanations I can come up with are either the margins are so bad it's not worth their investment or the manufacturer's have some oddball reason for not working together (which seems odd when Sekonic doesn't really have any competition from the major brands afaik).

I think it's a simple matter of numbers. Each module is required for a small market, look at 3rd party speedlights for Pentax and Olympus; and those numbers are massive compared to lighting brands.

The bottom line I suppose, is that the current simple workaround of setting the meter to look out for the flash works fine; using that, even if you buy an extra trigger for testing is cheaper than a module for a meter.

And if you're not working from a camera stand or tripod, the test button on your camera is handy enough even without an extra transmitter.

Yes I'm inclined to agree but I always seem to have the meter in one hand and the camera in the other, makes for some awkward juggling to fire both.

Press the button on the meter and you've got 15 secs to hit the shutter button (I tend to hold my camera by it's grip, pressing the shutter isn't too much of a 'juggle') Of course it's more of a struggle to get to the 'test' button, but I don't mind the odd wasted frame.

Now I have changed a couple of back lights I have all Elinchron d-lites (1x400, 2 x 200, 1 x 100). Just being able to change the power of my background light from camera position makes life so much easier.

Being able to see the power values and change them and fire the flashes and meter all from one device would be amazing. (But not £480 worth of Pocket Wizard adapters plus the upgrade to the L-478DR, it all gets a bit silly.)
