quite a tight crop ( from the original and then resized)
as you can see but I don't think it should be that noisey EXIF intact and shot in "largest" jpeg file
Any suggestions :shrug:

I suspect the issue is largely because most of the tones showing grain are darker areas of the shot and the darker tones have less bandwidth available to start with. This is a good example of where exposing to the right would show some real benefits. Shooting raw would help as well, esp. with the 40D and it's 14bit colour depth.

Does look odd that, especially for a Cannon... Only thing I can see, :thinking:... is that they look like you've missed the focus point, looks like it may have been the wall rather than the horse.

I conceed the the focus could be a bit off but I have other images from that session that are definately "bang on" and with a simlar effect :shrug:
