Hi there, hope you can assist.

I'm looking at getting a decent IPS monitor for picture editing. Budget is around £500. I was considering the dell ultrasharp 27" at just over 500 but the reports of the anti glare coating causing picture degredation and eye strain have put me off.

What other monitors are worth a peek?

Thanks

I have a pair of Dell U3212HMs. They needed calibrating but I'm pretty happy with them.

Available remarkably cheaply on Amazon.

Another vote for a Dell. I use a U2412 (No space for anything bigger and my budget couldn't stretch to a U2410). It is excellent and I have no complaints at all

Ooops. Of course I don't have 2 X 32 inch monitors.

I have 2 X U2312HMs. Plus another 20 inch.

You'll probably want a wide gamut monitor for photo editing. Just make sure you calibrate it. Dells are not bad but just make sure you get the wide gamut model. Have a look at the Asus PA246Q.

Not an issue to me; - it's a very good screen, while I can't stand anything even slightly glossy. The only other alternative is the new dell 2713 model if you'd prefer sRGB display and less coating.
the problem with all new 24" and smaller screens is that they are only 6bit, and this is not ideal for photography (potential for banding and less than ideal colour)

I have been running for the last 18 months a dell U2711 and have not found any real world validity to either of your concerns. I do assume you mean this model and not the inferior U2713 model?

The coating used on the U2711 monitor is detectable but only if you really enjoy pixel peeping will it perhaps then be noticed/interfere. Used at a sensible working distance I do prefer it to the equivalent glossy apple product and can easily work prolonged sessions in front of the monitor without any eye strain. The only thing I have needed to do was turn the brightness down to around 30 as my printed work was coming out a little dark.

Have a look at www.ebuyer.com as they have some great priced IPS monitors. Having just looked at them it's making me think I should put one on my christmas list.

Have a look at NEC range, very pleased with mine over the last 3 years.

I've just bought a NEC, may be a bit out of your budget but it's a massive improvement on my old Dell.

I was looking at the Hazro's as well, fantastic value for money but lack an OSD.

I can't use one of those fancy glossy displays, it has to be matt.

The image looks great but the reflection off my bald head gives me eye strain.

interesting topic
thinking about a similar purchase soonish.
what about the prolite iiyama IPS ones
£150 ish and I used to love my iiyama CRT back in the day

I'm looking at a new one myself to replace my Dell2209WA for more screen real estate and my conclusion is that at 24", the Dell 2410 is still one of the best ones for £350ish, and the 2412 is close behind for £215ish. Going for the latter actually, once I decide where's the best place to get it from.

If you haven't got 2 monitors already, I recommend it, even if the second is only a small one to have websites open for reference next to your editing screen.

I just bought a ips ViewSonic VX2336s 23in which arrived today, after reading lots of good reviews at dabs for £120. They maybe have a 27in version.

I've been having a look around. I would really like a larger screen with a much bigger resolution. The problem is my graphics card won't support larger resolutions such as 2560x1600, so it would also mean a card upgrade, a few more quid to find. :shake:
