securing an external HDD

I've just bought an external 500gb HDD, is there a way to secure it from being accessed by other people ?

As it's a usb connection, i'm guessing it'd show up on any pc as soon as it's plugged in...... so some sort of password protection would be handy.

Truecrypt is my preferred weapon of choice. Pretty easy to configure and use...
