hi there, in new here and was just wondering if anybody knows where i can get secondhand equipment from other than ebay? I am looking for second hand equipment as im a student and have very little money.

Once you meet the qualifying criteria (see the forum rules) there's a reasonably active trading section on this forum. Other forums may have different qualifying criteria.

There are several retailers that sell second-hand equipment, you best bet would be to buy a copy of Amateur Photographer magazine and look at the adverts in the back - it's published every Tuesday.

Joshua, it would help if you told us roughly where you are. I could recommend a few shops with 2nd hand stocks for you to visit (shops' descriptions can be optimistic when describing condition so it's best to examine stuff yourself) but that's not a lot of help if you're in Aberdeen!

The usual suspects seem to be MPB, Mifsuds and Ffordes but there are loads of smaller shops that have stocks of 2nd hand kit.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/

No offence intended Dave but would you seriously buy anything via Facebook?! :runaway:

Andy
do your due dilligence and it's fine, I've bought and sold various bits on that group. Google their name, check out their facebook etc...

But yes, MPB are also fantastic.

I have also bought second hand from the London Camera Exchange website too, they even offered a 3 month guarantee on the camera they were that confident it was in good condition. It was better than described, it was practically brand new!

Also look at refurbished - Canon have a refurbished outlet on Ebay, Fujifilm have a refurbished shop on their website - and Sony have an Education discount store on their website. I'm not sure about other manufacturers.

It's best to search the forum for comments on any particular on-line second hand dealer, there are some shady characters about, and you wouldn't want a rocky deal on a used camera that turned out to be not as described.

I've bought a fair bit from MPB over the years, kits always been fairly described and priced reasonably. I also like they back up the kit with a seller warentee you don't get private.

I've just sent of my first trade in, not as good price as private sale but far less hassle too.

Google search for used camera equipment, filter by a bigger city near you.

There are loads in Reading, a few in london.

London Camera Exchange have branches in lots of places. Worth popping in one of those.

Depends on what you are looking for and budget too, but pop to one or more of those or any local and have a chat with the staff... see what they can suggest.

Good luck!

wow thank you all so much i didn't expect such great responses, im about in the Birmingham area so im guessing there should be a few around its just finding them :)

The TP forums are worth keeping an eye on once you qualify for access. Just remember that there are rules for using these forums, they don't necessarily offer "bargains", and you won't get any warranty with a private sale.

The dealers mentioned in the previous posts all have websites, and most of them update their inventory quite often. Compare their prices for anything you're interested in. They all offer some sort of warranty too. My friends in the US speak highly of KEH, and I believe they rate their gear very conservatively, but the additional costs for international shipping and any potential returns might make them too expensive. Have a look anyway?
