Bit of advice please.

I have located a Sigma 10-20mm on a nikon mount and am pretty sure I can get the seller down to about the £200 mark from the £230 it is up for.

Apart from looking at the lens for scratches, marks etc and putting it on my camera can anybody think of anything else I can do to check it out and make sure I am not buying a pup!

£200 quid sounds like to good to be true but this person is switching to some brand called Canon?:bonk:

£200 you get what you pay for Bob.. Canon quality gear costs money..;)

Bob - Yeah 2nd hand is a leap of faith to a large degree - What do you know about the seller? Are you buying on a Forum where you can see some Trading Feedback? How old is the lens & where did he get it from?
I have bought and sold about six lenses in as many months & haven't come unstuck yet! - my biggest deal was on a 2nd hand D200 from someone also changing to Canon but I could tell from his list of gear he'd be the sort of guy to look after it (& I was right!) - He was close enough for me to see before I paid which was handy too ...

Well it's going new for around £290 so £200 for second hand is just cheap enough to be a good deal. As you said yourself Bob make sure its in good nick, if possible arrange to try it or be sure that the seller will take it back if you're not happy after you've bought it.

If you think its a bargain then its your money, Check out the lens and make your own mind up. If its a minty lens you will certainly have picked up a lens at a very good price..;)
 
As the others have said, is he close enough so that you can have a try of it before you buy?

Check the AF for struggling / problems, and also check MF for any grittiness, undue stiffness or grinding. Naturally check the casing for any cracks or damage, or for anything being unduly 'loose'.

Doesn't sound like a sarcastic reply to me buster :)

No it was meant in jest.

He is only half an hour down the road so I will have a run down and check it out. I rang earlier (after posting) and he has had a filter on the front to protect it the lens so it can't be too bad!

I will let you know how it goes.

After my purchase of the 300, I'd want to see it.

The lens I've bought isn't as nice a condition as I thought it would be. However, it does seem to be pin sharp, which I suppose is the main thing!!!!

Now, where do I buy that L paint colour :D

I went, I saw and I drove away! I am sure the skylight went on the front to protect the glass after he had wiped it with his shirt! Marked to hell - what a waste of an hour and a half of my life!!!
