as a newbie and trying to get bigger lenses on ebay the starting prices are about £200 from cost new whats that all about
Lenses hold their value, especially decent ones.
It's worth taking a look at some of the used dealers favoured on these pages, such as MPBPhotographic.

Ebay prices are notorious for being on the bizarre side - not unusual for them to be higher than new!
Use the advanced search feature on classifieds here or on other forums, you'll find much more reasonable 2nd hand prices!
if you are VAT registered its even more silly to buy at ebay prices - today I talked to a seller with a D700 + holy trinity lenses, he wanted more used than I would pay in a shop once VAT is knocked off, even with post earthquake prices...
