Second camera gear for portaits

Hi Matt
I think it might help if you say what lenses you have already, and what sort of location/subject you are going to be using them for.
For example, theres no point recommending an 85mm lens if you are hoping to shoot full length portraits where space is tight, where a 35mm lens might be more appropriate.
You see what I mean?

Almost any lens can be a portrait lens, you just have to know how to use it.

Of course this is very true, but not terribly helpful.

I still think there are factors affecting the decision of which lens to get depending on the room available/intending uses. There are some stunning portraits taken with a 300mm lens, but not seen too many taken in some-ones front room with one.

Thankyou

Well just basic head and shoulder shots ! I dont have a lot of money so i cant afford the expensive ones !

50 1.8
50 1.4
85 1.8
70-200 f4 (second hand)

to name just few.

For portraits I find 70-135 the best focal legth

As ReBeL has said, the 50mm lens is a great length, and are not too expensive. you will read many threads about which one is better than the other one etc etc, but generally it is fairly safe to say that any of them will be better quality optically than a kit lens.

Ha ha yes!

'People' talk about 85mm on a full frame so 50mm on a crop.

I used the 50mm F1.8 mark II before I got my 24-70 F2.8L and got some good results. Give it a go, for the money it's worth a try to see if it's for you?
