Hi all,

I am a motorsport photographer and I like to do on track and off track stuff which means a constant change in lens which can be annoying, time consuming and it would mean I miss something important.

I currently have a Canon 7D with a 300 f4 prime. I also have a 50mm 1.8 and am in the process of looking for another shorter lens. But after much though I came to the conclusion that a second body would be beneficial.

Now deciding which one is hard, as my 7D isn't full frame.

I don't want to spend a lot, something quite cheap that is still going to give good shots, even if it isn't full frame. It dosent have to be a pro slr, Aslong as I can do wide stuff and good driver shots without having to change lens, I will be happy! :)

Cheers guys.

Depending on what you want to spend I'd look at a 1D Mk2, they're cracking value at sub £400, superb AF, weathersealed, quick frame rate, and much more capable than the age would suggest. They'd complement your existing 7D by being a slightly larger sensor (1.3x crop) so you'll not lose all the reach you would going full frame but your wide lenses will still be wider than the 7D.

If you got one and your 7D packed up you could continue working with the 1D2 as a main camera without issue, which wouldn't be the case if you went for an older full frame body like a 5D.

Been looking at them, most with high shutter counts now though.

It doesn't really matter though, they're rated at 200,000 and many go on for longer, my 1Ds had done 242,000 before it needed replacing. In any case a new shutter from Canon Elstree cost me £220 +VAT so far from the end of the world.

As long as you can take clean shots at 1/8000s at high fps it has got plenty of life left in it. Sometimes lack of use can cause bits to go 'rusty' and fail quicker.

Your issue with buying a 5D classic is that it wouldn't be much use for motorsport as a backup if your main body went down during a job.

I wish I had researched a little more before buying my 5D classic. While far from ideal, I still find it a fairly capable body for Motorsport. As for saying that it isn't much use, I think it is still more than capable of producing good racing shots. I have shot Motorsport exclusively using this body for the past year, and while the af and burst rate may not be the best, the versatility it offers in other areas may make it worth considering.

If you're struggling to find a good 5D C, what about a 5D mkII ? If you're wanting full frame as a 2nd body, then the mkII is very capable. Another option is a 40 / 50 / 60D which will give you a good fps to use as a 2nd body for motorsport or why not another 7D ?
