I am doing a wedding next moth and i have a few bookings for next year so i will be needing a second body asap.
At th moment i shoot a D300 which i love but i am unsure of which way i should go in respects to a second body.
I have been looking at the S5 pro for a while now due to its dynamic range but im also very tempted by the d700. I know they are quite different camers with very differnt price tags.

I would really like the D700 but tbh i doubt i will have the cash before the first wedding.

I can afford the s5 pro which makes it seem the more obvious choice but Im unsure how it will perform at high ISO.

Would a s5 pro and d300 make a good alround combo for some one who maily shoots people.

I have an S5 Pro and D300.
work fine for me.

What lenses are you using?

My main lens is the nikon 28-70 f2.8. i use this for all my portraits etc.
I also have a cheap 70-700mm which doesnt get much use.
I hire lenses for the jobs i have which i just add onto the cost of the job.
im hiring the 70-200mm f2.8 for the wedding

This was taken on the S5 Pro in RAF with the 70-200 2.8 iso 1000.

Scuse the effect but image has only had levels played with and sharpened.

no noise removed. will try to find orig.

Excuse the cast not sure where that came from

Can I ask why you seem to have ruled out a 2nd D300? I would have thought it would make perfect sense, familarity and all that. :)

I have been trying to make the same decision as you and I am almost certain I am going to go with a D700 - whilst I am sure the s5 pro is good, the full frame and high ISO are features I really want.

My D300 would then become my 2nd/backup camera

If you are going to work with two bodies (as opposed to using the 2nd one as back up) then it is MUCH easier to have two identical bodies.....so another D300 for you!

Have to agree, otherwise you may have to consider lens changes, but will definitely have different working distances - which might take a little time to get used to.

I've no experience of a D700 but I had a s5pro and it was fab. It's the only camera I've used that produced superb jpeg shots with v little processing. Skin tones in particular were always spot on.

Gets a thumbs up from me :)

But where can you get an S5 now? the ones on ebay seem to be getting pretty serious money!

To be fair, the D300 and D700 layout is pretty much identical. I had no issues when using a friends.

The layout may be identical however the issue will then come down to field of view; very different if you are used to a certain view on a cropped-sensor. I wouldn't want to be swapping bwetween FX/DX at the drop of a hat.
