Hi all,

I am begining to get quite enthusiastic about having a crack at portrait/people studio photography. I am in the research stage at the moment and getting myself to a point where I am starting to get kit together. (OK its being done on a budget, but its a hobby at the moment, right!)

I am thinking about seamless backgrounds using paper. I have had a look at the stands and rigs available and have realised that, I can make my own stand at a much reduced cost.
I have a PA kit that has two nice big sturdy speaker stands, that will extend high enough and look the same style/build as stands available for backdrops. I am now looking at engineering a solution to make the cross bar. Thats the easy bit.
My question is this, whats the best way to set up a seamless backdrop? Where the backdrop meets the floor, how do you ensure there is a nice curve there and that the paper doesn't "slump", do you have something behind to act as a guide/rest?

Thanks in advance for your help peeps, once again I am calling on the vast knowledge base of TP to help me out!!

Has anyone got any help on this?! Surely some of you who use rigs like this have tips!?

Cool, thanks Kerioak. Do you find that the paper needs supporting at the curve between the floor and "wall" created by the paper?

That is the advantage of using proper kit and decent weight paper - it shouldn't need supporting, no, but that will depend on the sturdiness of your stand arrangement!

Cheers,
James

I should be able to sort it so that the stands are stury with the roll on. I just wondered if the paper had a tendency to fall in on itself in the curve area. The reason I asked about supporting it was I read about a guy who made this extravagant polystyrene curved base that sat behind to force a curve.
