Hi,

Visiting the Sealife Centre in Birmingham tomorrow and having never taken a dslr there, does anyone have any tips for shooting in that kind of place?

I'll be using my D90 with my 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 lens?

you may struggle with the darker tanks

with it being a moving target you wont be able to slow the shutter down to much so it is prob going to be shoot wide open and up the iso

Thanks guys, forgot to mention that i'd be taking a polariser with me aswell.....

Dunno if I'm too late to answer but shooting into tanks plays havock with AF so I'd go manual focus if I were you!

High ISO, wide open and manual focus + a polariser and you should be all set! Oh, and please don't use flash!

I did some shooting at Blue Reef in Newquay. I didn't use my polariser because as others said it cuts down the already limited light too much, didn't really have much trouble with reflections anyway.

I boosted my ISO and got some decent shots of slower moving subjects in the more well lit tanks. Faster moving things and dim tanks were pretty much write-offs. Obviously flash was out.

Needless to say, I struggled a bit with the f3.5 lens and the lowlight; I don't think I have many "keepers" lol !!

Note to self: Need to a faster lens.....

I'll go through my shots and post any (Semi) ok ones that I have.

The polariser was more of a hinderance than a help and as JayJay posted, reflections weren't really any trouble.

I went to The Deep in Hull the other week and had a 24-105 f4 L on my 5D3 but even upping the ISO wasn't getting me fast enough for anything more than jellyfish. I decided to change for a 35 f2 prime and that certainly helped a lot. I managed to get some really good shots with the lens hood right up close to the tank. I tried with a polariser but found I didn't need it if I could get close enough to the tanks.
This is one I got at 1/100 and ISO 2000 at f2, it was that dark. No PP apart from cropping and it was taken around 10 feet from the tank, hence a few reflections.
