Hi all,
Taken delivery of my Nikon D80 today. However, i've only got a 256MB SD card which will hold a whopping 20 RAW images.

I've spotted an 8GB SDHC card on Amazon for £16, made by Transcend. It's a class 6 device, which i understand should give a decent rate of speed.

However, how reliable are Transcend? I've not come across them before. Is there anywhere cheaper to get 4/8GB cards from?

Cheers,
Matt

Never heard of Transcend, but I use 4 GB Class 6 Kingston SDHC cards from dvd.co.uk. The class number relates to the Data Transfer Rate, eg, Class 6 = 6 MB/sec.

£16 is pretty cheap for an 8 GB Class 6 card...maybe a bit too cheap?

That's what i'm thinking. It does have a lifetime warranty, but loosing 8GB of RAW's would be a bit annoying to say the least! I'm wondering whether it's better to get a couple of 4GB's instead, and "spread the risk".

I'm also not sure the Class thing means anything in real terms. Am i likely to notice a speed boost on the D80 with a class 6 compared to a class 2?

Transcend have been making ram / memory based products for years, their stuff is very well regarded in industrial usage, I have 4 x 1gb cf cards which i have had for years, retired them last year and moved to sandisk extreme.

I learned a lesson with my D80, and a cheap memory card... The lesson was "don't"!

I never use anything but Sandisk ExIII and ExIV cards now, both SD and CF.

I have 4 x 8GB Transcend CF cards that I have used without problems with a D70s and D300 - I also use them at work for virtual PC's - complete XP Pc on a Chip. During benchmaking i have been unable to get the stated data transfers (X266), but this may be down to the CF reader i use.

Well, i decided to go with what i know and get a 4GB Class6 Kingston card + Card Reader from DVD.co.uk. I was going to get the Transcend, but the postage cost didn't make it worthwhile getting from Amazon. Will pickup another 4GB later in the year no doubt anyway :D

Thanks for the advice,
Matt

Bit late here but, Transcend are better known in the USA, they make excellent products.

Never mind, the postage was silly on the 8GB anyway. Might pick one up when they become a bit more mainstream.

Matt

I can't see a problem with it, can be hit and miss sometimes, ive had Extreme 2 & 3's SD and just recently had a failure with one and is under warranty now, Transcend are very popular in Australia and i use them without any probs..
