SDHC card problem

Morning, I bought my D3100 last Friday. As said in previous posts, I'm a complete novice.

The bloke in the shop said that I needed a class 10 memory card. All I had was a class 4, so my missus bought me a Transcend sdhc class 10 16gb off e-bay.

Now the problem is, I can view the photos from the card on my laptop no problem, but when I try to transfer them to my documents it locks my laptop up. I had to remove the battery to clear it, this happened both times I tried it.

Now I know as much about computers as I do photography :bang: :lol:

My laptop is a Fujitsu AH530, intel core i3, running windows 7, so nothing fancy.



Can the card be faulty?

Is it possible that my lappy can't cope?

When I use the class 4 I have no problem......so did I even need a class 10?

Any advise please?

Rule No1............never buy memory cards from Ebay!

moving swiftly on,

Are you using the laptop inbuilt card reader or an external reader. If using the laptop reader try an external reader and vice versa.

Since buying it, that's not the first time I've read that.......so I've learnt something already :lol:

Yes, I'm putting the card direct into the lappy.

So using the lead to download direct from the camera would be like using an external reader?

Sorry if that sounds daft......but if you don't ask...........:thinking:

If you don't have a reader then try using the lead from the camera.

It's a process of elimination

Graham, it looks to me ( I'm guessing) like German! :eek:

I have enough trouble with English :D
 
I think you should try and get the images from the card before you do anything else.
 
it is german - google translate works well here - and on the program there is a button that puts it into english


and yes - it does fully write the card first - so if you can get the images off first, do!

Actually, I should have said, the few pictures that are on the card are just test shots so not important.

just waiting for the missus to come home.......I can't find the lead to connect camera to lappy , then I'll give your earlier advice a go :thumbs:

Ok, format the card in the camera, take a few shots and try again. :)
 
Right.......firstly, thanks for the replies and ideas :thumbs:

I have now located the lead :whistling: (thanks love x) :D


For some reason I have yet to figure out :bonk:, I can now not only view my photos, but transfer them into my documents using the lead to link the camera and lappy with the 16gb class 10 card still in the camera :thinking:

No idea why it won't let me transfer them when the card is inserted into the built in card reader. Strange,because I have no problem using the 4gb class 4 card in the card reader :shrug:

......its starting to make mi head hurt :nuts:

At least it doesn't look like the 16gb sdhc card was a waste of money :clap:

I bought it new about 16/18 months ago

The processor is :- Intel(R) Core (TM) i3 CPU M380 @ 2.86GHz

RAM 3.00GB

64 bit Operating system

Windows 7

TBH the above doesn't mean a lot to me

It wasn't an expensive one.......but it's certainly been quick enough for anything I've wanted to do
 
Glad you've managed to sort it out...

As you can transfer from a smaller SD card using the inbuilt reader - it could be the reader doesn't support the larger size of card ?

As Neil suggests, see if there are any updates available for your laptop...
 
Cheers Andy........ I've spoken to a :geek:'y mate......its ok, he's not on here :lol:.......and he says that the reader in my lappy shouldn't have a problem with the class 10 card at all :shrug:

He has offered to try sort it me, but for now I'll just transfer my photo's to the laptop with the card still in the camera.

Hi

Was thinking more about the size of the card rather than the speed.

And don't forget, you could always buy a card reader as another option.

Hope you manage to get it sorted out though
 
May not be related but my desktop (about 5 years old now) card reader will only read SD cards up to 1Gb. Plug in a USB card reader and it will read any size with no problem.

The SD standard went to SDHC some time ago, SDHC reads the old SD ( upto 2Gb), but the old SD won't even see the SDHC card.

the web site for the SD card standards recommends you use their own formatter software as it allows for the way the hardware works, you could try that at least once.
 
Thanks for all the ideas and advice, but it looks like the card is faulty and is going back.

last night I got this message on the camera

Been in touch with the seller on e-bay and,although they claim its the first faulty one in around 700 sold, they are sending me a replacement :thumbs:
