Lost the 2nd SD card in less than 9months this morning - not impressed.

The quality of SD cards is questionable at times, they are not very resilient... really annoys me [rant over]

As it stands the card is deemed unformatted now even though there are obviously images still on it.

Are there any utilities i could try that may be able to read it ?

Tried PC inspector PRO but just thinks there's no card in the drive.

Many thanks in advance,
Mike.

Hi Mike, sorry to hear of your problem.

Can you still see the images on the rear screen of the camera? If so, then I would transfer them from there via a USB cable before trying to recover the card.

In the past I have used Lexar's Image Rescue software and version 3 of this can often be found for free on the internet.

Good luck :)

try pandora recovery... that's free too

I have used card recovery a few time (mostly for the same customer lol) and it's worked every time for me.

:agree:

Just to throw another free utility into the mix, Piriform's Recuva is very good too :)

yep, i use Recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva all the time at work, very good little utility - it's recovered files from some totally mullered memory sticks - give it a go but do a 'deep' scan (will take ages, but will find absolutely everything)

Think the problem guys is the card is not even recognized in the drive - all the utilities so far can't get past the fact the card doesn't appear to be there....i need something that somehow ignores the fact the card is not recognised as being valid and just scans what's there...

have you tried the card in an external card reader or another pc/laptop? i had this with a 320gb external hd - damn frustrating when you know there's data on it but you can't even access the drive!! :bonk:

I've heard people suggest a quick format of the duff card and then try the recovery programs again ?....worth a try ?...the risk i guess is another format may end any chance of recovery...

Are you constantly moving them in and out of your camera?

Constant wear on the pins and contacts could lead to a situation like this which is why I always download camera images via the USB cable.

Takes a lot longer but no problems with the contacts etc.

I think you should still be able to recover some/most of the data after formatting. I did this after my wife reformatted the card in her old Canon A610 by mistake, and I got 90% of the images back. It's overwriting the card by taking more photographs that complicates things.

Formatting the card should cause any issues, thats just removing the index (sort of) it shouldn't really alter the files.

Bizarrely guys a product called Zero assumption restored all the files from a faulty card i'd used on my camcorder, they've come back with full size and all the details about the .mov's but they simply won't play :-(

These files are more important than the photos tbh so it's gutting to be so near yet so far.....i've tried playing them using VLC to no avail.

Any ideas how these .mov files could be played ?

I've used recuva a couple of times now and I only lost 4 photos from a batch of 430ish and 1 from a batch of 103. I've got to say for a free program I'm very pleased with it.

Check the file size to see if they are the proper .Mov files (not just indexs or something) then check to see if the ".mov" is the correct file type for that camera, will they open in windows movie maker or premier?

As you can see all the sizes and details have come back fine. I've tried movie maker, realplayer, vlc and media player...all to no avail :-(

VLC at least shows a still from the footage but nothing else

If anyone has any software they believe could help i could dropbox one of the files to test ?
