My father bought a SanDisk Ultra SDHC I 8GB card for his Samsung compact. With the card in the camera won't switch on. To confirm it was the card at fault I tried it in my Samsung compact (different model) and it says the memory is full. In my 450D it works perfectly.
Would it be because it's a HC card that's causing the problem in the compacts? On the plus side I've now got a new 8GB card ;)

It might be too "big" in terms of memory, we have a Nikon compact here that will only take cards up to 1GB. Have you checked the specs on the compacts?

Some will not accept sdhc cards at all. Try a normal (ordinary) sd card to make sure it's not the camera.

As above. Some cameras can't use HC cards, or any card above a certain size. Check the camera specifications, they should tell you what cards it's designed for, or try it with an ordinary card and see if makes any difference.

Thanks for the reminder! I have an oldish Canon selphy printer that won't read SDHC cards. Must mention that in the thread that I offered advice on.

Thanks for the replies.

Both compact cameras work with the normal SD cards we already had in them.

You're welcome. Glad you sorted it!

When I wanted a couple of extra plain SD cards, I found some 2GB ones in Boots. I dare say I could have found them cheaper online but I needed them immediately (we were off on holiday the next day) so needs musted!
