Following best advice I reformat the cards when I reload them into the camera but it then always calls them "Nikon D90". Is there any method of retaining the name of the card so that manage them without confusion.

Its because your formatting via your camera so its resetting them to your cameras details. If you format via your computer you can change the name. Just right click your drive via my computer and click format. Then just change the volume name and click format.

Be aware that it is not unknown for SD cards that are formatted on a pc (or Mac) to give trouble - normally failure to record the image correctly or completely. Not sure if this is a Nikon thing or whether it happens with other brands too.

First time I heard about that, but then again I don't format cards via my computer.

yes, format your cards with your camera. If you need to physically identify them apart, use a sharpie :)

best workflow is to use a card case where card one way up = backed up and can be formatted, other way up = do not wipe.

Andy, as I said it might be just a Nikon thing but on other forums (fora?) that are nikon specific almost every SD card problem that is reported comes down to being formatted in a PC (or Mac). Standard advice is to format in the camera every time :)

Not just a Nikon thing. I've had it with my 300D when I first got it. I always format in camera now.

Back to the OPs question though, I'm not sure where confusion can arise. i just keep used cards separate from unused cards. If need be use a permanent marker to number them and keep note of what's on them.

Cheers for the responses fellas, can see the simple system working Dave but sometimes i'm trying to pull photos together onto one card to pass on to others so have two in the reader at the same time. I wondered if they can be tagged permanently but will probably resort to renaming when I pug them in.

I'll have play and see what works.

Cheers
