I want to upgrade the SD card in my D5000 but it’s a bit of a mine field. From what I gather SDHC is the way to go and the higher the class the better. So if that is actually the case, are there notable performance differences say between this:

And this much cheaper one of the same spec.

Also is such a fast card actually going to make a difference to me?

Cheers.

Why do you need to upgrade?

Is the card too small?

If it's only speed you are looking at I wouldn't bother, the camera's buffer, and the speed the camera can write from the buffer to the card will be the limiting factor.

If it's size, a 16GB Transcend (Class 10) or 16GB Sandisk (Class 4) can picked up for around £16 from the 7dayshop or Amazon.

Hi James, yes it is a size thing mainly, I've got 1gb at the moment. So is there a difference between a Transcend and A sandisk?

Doesn't seem to be, even though one is class 10 and the other class 4.

I don't know about the D5000, but on my D90 the buffer will hold 9 raw files, so that is 2 seconds of continuous shooting on high, something I rarely do, but when I've tried filling the buffer with either card, everything slows down once I've maxed the buffer out.

Some people seem to think the Sandisk cards are more reliable than Transcend, and other people vice versa.

You will probably find people posting that two 8GB cards will be better than one 16GB (due to minimising data loss in a (freak) failure), but that is personal preference. A 16GB SD card will hold over 1000 RAW files, but I never take that many anyway in one session. But I do use SD cards for transferring data between computers sometimes, so the bigger storage comes in handy.

also, just watch who the ebay supplier is, as there was an issue with fake SD cards hitting ebay - poor data transfer rates.

Cheers guys, helpful info
