Hello all!
In need of some helpful advice regarding SD cards for my new canon 5ds. I’m using the SanDisk Extreme plus 80mb/s class 10 which I used for my canon 6d and it was perfect! With this camera I’m finding that it’s super slow capturing pictures even when the shutter is whacked up! Do I need to invest in another SD? What would you recommend?

Thank you so much!

What would you recommend?

I would go for the SanDisk Extreme Pro but did you
reformat the card in in the 5D?

Is a SDXC HCII maybe required?

Hi there, I did indeed... still very slow. Thank you for that advice, I’ll take a look at one!

Shutter speed won't make any difference... you are looking at write speed here and you are looking at writing files that are 2.5 times larger so it will be slower than writing from the 6D.

Are you recording raw or JPEG?

Extreme Pro I would guess would be the one to look at, but a lot will depend on the speed that the camera writes to an SD card.

Are you writing to two cards?

From what I remember from my days with Canon, if you write to both cards at once then the write speed to both cards is that of the slowest card. So, if you need to use two cards at the same time you must have very fast cards in both slots or accept a slowish write time.

Looking at card speeds on camera memory speed your 5Ds should have a faster write speed than the 6D but file size may make a difference if you are now writing larger files (20MP to 50MP)?

Are you writing to two cards at once (slow CF card)? What file types are you using (12 bit compressed or 14 bit compressed)? Sounds like a setting may have changed when changing between the 6D and 5Ds.

Hello Suzy,

I've been using a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC class 10 card with my 5DS since I bought it & never had an problems with write speed, I tend to use a CF card as my main card which is a SanDisk Extreme 64GB 120mb/s UDMA7. if it helps I shoot only RAW to a single card at the same time. The buffer on the 5DS is a bit slow but dont worry about that it will catch up :)

Thank you SO MUCH you’ve been so helpful.
I was so disappointed when I got the 5dsr, compared to my 6d it was so slow and I found the focus was just off! I’m hoping that getting the right SD card will help matters...

Shocked to hear focus is off. Sometimes photography equipment is very disappointing indeed. Is there a fine tune on it ?

It's possible a faster card could help but I'm having trouble finding the SanDisk Extreme Plus 80mb/s cards you say you have. I can find either SanDisk Extreme 80MB/S or SanDisk Extreme Plus 90MB/S (write at 60MB/S).

What CF card (if any) are you using? CF cards are much faster than SD cards so it's possible you may be better investing in a CF card rather than an SD card if you not are only writing to one card.

I've used SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MBs cards for several years with no problems. I currently combine them with a Lexar Professional 1066x CF card writing to both cards since getting a D810.

A decent CF card will be faster too.

I use a SanDisk Extreme 64gb 120MBs CF and a LexarPro 64gb 65MBs SDXC with no problems at all, with my 5Ds although I mainly do landscapes so speed isn't a big issue. I have used them on safari as well and again wasn't a real problem.
I write to both and also use RAW. Don't forget you are getting far bigger files than the 6D. Not sure what your issue is with the focus though, as mine it so sharp.
