Morning All,

I am in the running for a week long shoot abroad, I have a 77d so only one card slot and it will be all day shooting and evening back in hotel. I will have my laptop in the hotel but wondered if there was any solution you use to backup cards during the day without having to get the laptop out?

I have external HDD's, or could buy extra flash drives if needed. I have an android phone and an iPad that could be used (both lighter than the laptop).

Don't really want to spend a fortune, have seen some hdd's with sd card slot that are quite expensive.

Thank you for any advice!!

Have a look at kingston mobilite products or similar on amazon. Should let you plug in sd and hdd and control transfer from your android phone

I used to use one of these (early version) before getting wd mypassport wireless pro. It was a bit of a faff with the mobilite but achievable but is simple with the wd, it just does what needs to be done

I would just buy some extra cards and maybe battery’s and back up in the evening? Connection lead to Ipad is expensive and as you say hdd with SD card slot is also costly.....smartphone might not have a big memory and again you could be buying extra memory cards for this. I find eventually getting shots off the iPad a pain......

Backing up from camera will use the battery and you could miss something shooting wise......

I back up to an Android Galaxy Tab S tablet whilst on holiday, memory card reader with a micro usb jack and a 128GB micro SD card to expand the memory is all I need
Presumably if your phone has the same memory card capability and is OTG enabled that would work the same way

Used it many times now and never had any issues, just remember though you still need to keep the originals otherwise its not a back up

Take enough capacity on SD cards to get you through the day and then just backup to the laptop every evening. Any USB, Bluetooth, wireless, NFC or whatever connection is likely to be pretty slow anyway.

iv'e tried a few ways over the years to back up whilst out and about, the most hassle free way is using the WD my passport wireless pro
it's not the cheapest option but it does what it says and is reasonably quick compared to other methods i have tried

Cheers all, I have enough batteries and sd cards to get me through the days shooting, but am more worried about only having one copy until I get back to the hotel. For my own peace of mind i will have to make copies and not delete the cards as the day goes on so I will have two copies of the photos, then copy to the laptop in the evening and format the sd cards for the next day.

I have tried connecting my phone to the camera and I can see the pics, but have to select them individually to download. I can't send them straight to the phones sd card, only to internal memory, so they need moving straight away. Meanwhile I would not be taking pics!!

Sounds like the WD is the way to go, it is a shame that canon don't have a backup usb option, the port is there and it seems to be something that will be used.

You could backup directly from you camera to ipad. If you get the Apple Camera kit it allows you to plug the camera in to the ipad (im assuming your camera has USB). You can copy all at once. This is what i do (although to my iphone) when im out. It helps if you have USB3 at each end though.
When IOS 12 comes out things will be much better for IOS photos, but thats not much help now.

That's pretty much what I do. I use the Apple SD card to Firewire adapter in the evening to move all the files from card to Ipad and then use Photos to sort out what I want to keep and delete the rest.

Its a lot easier these days. In the old days it was a nightmare
Thinking about it my post above was a bit off. As the 77D is SD card then the SD card to lightning is the one to go for (its what i use the most). Card in, transfer to IOS device, LR mobile imports them and backs them up (as well as the ipad/iphone doing it). That way i end up with two back ups. Normally once the raw files are in LR mobile i delete the Photos App version to clear out space on my ipad/iphone.
As my ipad has USB3 and i use a very fast SD card (faster than the camera can use) it only takes a min or so to back up 300-400 raw files.
