SD card backup device

I've seen a few 'Hard disk memory banks' around, but I've got no idea how reputable they are! They don't seem to be made by the well-known brands so I'm not sure howhappy i'd be about entrusting my photos to them! One sec, I'll have a search!

If you don't want to spend a great deal look on ebay for either "vosonic" or "multimedia storage viewers"

I've had a Vosonic X-drive 2060 for 4 years, has a 40Gb HD with slots for CF/SD/Memory Stick etc.

You can find the newer units for less than £100 but be careful as not everybody supports SDHC yet

10 Gig as a backup? I would go for a few 4GB cards and keep the images on the cards until I got home.

I use this HDD case, which has its own rechargeable battery and can take CF, SD, MS cards etc..

You need to fit the HDD of your choice, but that's a doddle - undo 4 screws, push fit the HDD into the unit and screw it back up again. I have a 120GB HDD that I bought specifically to fit and it works perfectly, but you could potentially salvage an HDD from an old laptop or something. You need a 2.5" IDE drive (not SATA) of 9.5mm height. Something like this should do nicely....

Any thoughts on this for approx £64 del ? http://www.cbadigital.co.uk/photobank.htm

From the display, it looks functionally identical to the enclosure that I have, but with a different case design. However, my solution would cost ~£73 (£23 + £50) for 160GB storage vs £120 for the equivalent thing from cbadigital.

£64 for a 40GB solution that is otherwise the same thing seems a pretty poor deal. You could always bring down the cost of "my" solution by fitting a smaller HDD.

Personally I'd spend £73 to get 160GB. I use mine not only to back up memory cards in the field, but also to backup all my photos, software and documents from my laptop. I still have spare capacity, for now, to safely download all photos from a wedding or travel vacation etc., when out and about. A 40GB solution would severely limit its use and I'd rather spend the extra £9 to have far more capacity and flexibility.
