Screw-on Polariser with 100mm filters

Hi guys,

I'm slowly getting together a 100mm filter system and would like to get a polariser too. I have the Hoya circular screw-on type polarisers for my other lenses, just looking to get one for my 77mm lens but I have read in some places that not having the polariser as the outer-most filter can mean that it doesn't work as well if it has say an ND in front of it.

I must say I would rather the screw in type as: a) it is much cheaper than the large one that goes on top of a 100mm system and b) it would be more versatile for general use as a walk around.

Does anyone have any experience of this particular issue?

Thanks

If you want to use the 100mm filters then I out will need a polariser that attaches to the holder.

1. The holder can not attach with a screw in polariser attached.
2. You wouldn't be able to turn the polariser.

Thanks for the response. If there is a thread in the end of the screw-in polariser, the 100mm holder could still be attached, no?

Most polarisers have a screw thread to the front that the lee adapter screws into. Seems fiddly to use though.

It's interesting that lee recommend putting the polariser to the front as I note that a fair few of the alternatives are now fitting a cpl at the back. Not sure of the theoretical performance differences between the two arrangements.

Okay, my screw in polariser doesn't have a thread on the front, but even if some do it's still going to make it difficult to turn the filter with a holder and 1 or 2 filters attached.

Agreed. The cost difference is rather large though, looking at £150 for the 105mm one that goes on the outside, vs say £50 for a Hoya screw in type (both if bought new).

When I factor in the versatility of the 77mm which could stay on my 77mm walk around lens on a sunny day it seems crazy for me to go for the 105mm, my question was more from the performance point of view.

More potential for vignetting too I would have thought.

Just some other inputs that may or may not help.

There are other cheaper 105mm CPL options. Haida, B&W, Hitech etc. I just missed out on a used 105mm B&W on ebay a couple of weeks back. I'm sure it went for just over £30.

Again, with 77mm filters, I bought a mint used 77mm Hoya Pro1 CPL for about £25. Might just allow you to try out both options and see which works best. You could always upgrade later.

No idea on the technicalities but I honestly can't see why if makes much difference. If anything I would imagine that the polariser's ability to kill unwanted reflections would mean it's best closest to your lens. I do imagine it's far more user friendly to have the polariser more accessible though at the front though.

If you do a search, I think @snerkler had a thread running on a similar topic recently.

I did, this one

But there was another one running too.

In the end I chose the Hitech Firecrest filter holder as it worked out much cheaper than the Lee filter holder with polariser. I have a circular polariser but as mentioned above you can attach a filter holder to the front but you can't turn the polariser as that would also rotate the grad filters and chances are they wouldn't align to the horizon or whatever. So IMO you have the options of using a CPL and then just hand holding the grad filters in front, or buying a filter system with integrated CPL.

FYI Hitech have 25% off ending tomorrow. Something else to note is the prices listed are before VAT, bit cheeky if you ask me.

Has it arrived yet? Interested to hear your thoughts.
