Screen calibration issue

I have a laptop with a reasonable LG IPS screen and a Dell U2412M monitor. I calibrate them using an xRite i1 Display Pro. This works fine and I am happy with the results I get.

The problem I am having is that when I turn on the laptop it has always reverted to the standard screen setup and ignores the fact that I have created a new profile (even though I set this to default). Even if I just change the brightness (it always comes on with the brightness set to maximum) it doesn't remember this from one session to the next. There must be a setting in Windows 8.1 that I am missing - anyone have any ideas about what I need to do so that I don't need to recalibrate every time I do some editing?

have you got the x-rite calibration software running?

it should run n startup and thus load the display profile for your laptop and the monitor
 
I haven't got it running. I just assumed that by saving the profile and making it the default one that it would automatically get used. I suppose I could always read the instructions... ;)
 
the x-rite software needs to run on startup if you want to load the monitor profiles. it should have set itself run on windows startup automatically when you installed the software. so you must have turned it off through MSCONFIG or SERVICES after installation. so there lies your problem.

windows won't load the profile for you, the x-rite software does that!
 
The xRite software must have loaded and I definitely haven't turned it off, but I think I may have found the problem (though haven't had time to actually fix it yet). When I first turn on the laptop it is using the right settings and the screen looks right, but within a couple of seconds it defaults to the full brightness setting.

From the help page at xRite there seems to be an issue with timing of the various startup routines on some machines, so the Windows setting runs after the xRite setting and over-rides it. They suggest downloading a piece of software that you can set to delay certain startup items so there is no conflict. If you set the xRite software to run last then it will be the standard setting. I will try it over the weekend.
 
That is interesting. I suggest u uninstall xrite and reinstall it and also when u calibrate select option for xrite to manage the screen every 10-15min using ambient condition. See if your problem goes away. Windows may have its own profile but that won't load unless you have used windows screen calibration

I would suggest you don't do this.

I have an i1 Display Pro and use DispcalGUI (and the underlying Argyll CMS) to manage the colours on my 3 monitors. I don't have the X-Rite software installed at all (I may have the drivers installed - I can't remember, but the calibration software isn't on my system).

whats the harm of xrite adjust to ambient conditions? just out of interest, i have been doing it for a long time previously with my huey., wondering if there is anything wrong with the method as I am not 100% clued up on the profiling etc

Monitors should be calibrated to a standard and stay there. Allowing the unit to take account of the ambient will be screwing with the lookup tables and as the display is non linear you won't get accurate colour, plus you may well (if you are like me, you *will*) be hyper annoyed with the varying output levels. Better to adjust the conditions you are working in to have good consistent lighting rather than having a single measure (which is what the ambient sensor does) affect everything.
 
I see. Yes you are right it does increase output levels and sometimes I disable the ambient measurement esp when I am editing. But I leave it t on for watch films etc. Thanks for the clarification.
 
May thanks for all the replies. Have downloaded the dispcalgui so will give that a try and see how it goes :)

Yet that's exactly what it does do. The calibrated profile is installed as the Windows default (according to dispaly device) by the Xrite software.
 
It sounds to me more like a power profile issue than a calibration one.
