we are with scottish power for both our gas and electric and while they provide a decent service there online system is the joke of the century ,i just did a online meter reading and despite being a few hundred pounds in payment credits they wanted to up our payment by £63 per month ,both me and the wife were moderately annoyed (thats putting it mildly) and last night did a online u.switch check .

however this morning i have phoned them up and totally ready to give them a good verbal stuffing was told very politely they were having problems with there computer algorithms and in fact they could drop our current payments by £20 a month .RESULT

but what a bunch of wallies it must make them feel .pays to check and complain though .

I'd still check out the competition. SP are one of the more expensive suppliers.
We changed to (edit)Avro and are saving about £300 a year.

Would never use SP again, in part because they always put up there prices and I got fed up going through the same cr@p every quarter. With them saying usage indicating I needed to pay more and me saying "no the account is in credit and why should my predicted usage go up by 20% the next year when it hadn't the previous years".

i was considering it but checking on u.switch and others the new payment deal comes out exactly the same .so until the next cock up/meter reading episode its easier to leave alone ,plus there would be a £60 opt out to leave them negating any savings

^ Fair enough :)

I had that with EON,

I tried that with EON, but they said their figures were correct, I switched to SSE and am on target to save just short of £400/ year

I pay quarterly by cheque after doing my own meter reading/check. The £5 surcharge for paying this way is negated by an early payment discount.

with SP for three years and get a good deal- you can't say they are one of the most expensive suppliers when they are not

So saving £300 a year by changing to another supplier makes them one of the cheapest?

Changing every couple of years seems to be the way to go after joining offers lapse.

When I left Scottish Power about 6 months ago they were having "problems with the web site" affecting online accounting and couldn't provide accurate bills. Seems the problems are still there. I was happy with SP for years but a word of warning -- always download copies of your bills if you go paperless as they disappear from the web site or appear to be available but aren't!

the trick with SP is to use the "direct debit manager" to keep reducing it until it says you need to make a one off payment and then increase it by a pound - it is also well worth going into the dd manager the next day as it will sometimes let you then reduce it further - they hate it when people pay the minimum possible dd but there will always be "mean" people like me who prefer to hang onto money as long as possible and their system accommodates them but in a roundabout way.
