Has anyone been there - what's the weather usually like from mid Oct to mid November?

plus the wildlife, particularly birds

any info that you have will be appreciated

Been to Uist a few times in October. Last time we had sun every day for the week we were there. Before that we had rain for 4 days from 7 but the rain passes over quickly. It can be quite windy around October. If you get a clear sky at night you will see the best skies you will ever see as the stars just pop in a completely dark sky.

For birds expect the waders to retuned by then. We also had a lot of Redwing etc in October, you can get quite a few Twite etc as well. Don't expect to see many short eared owls in October though. Anything else just ask.

It is impossible to predict the weather accurately. As that time of year you could get something very stormy but I've seen 4 consective days of force 5 and above with plenty of rain in July. It can change very quickly so be prepared to react at almost a moments notice, and as Mark has mentioned if you get a clear sky at night its going to be spectacular and hope for a large CME too.

Thanks guys - I think I will give it a miss

Let me know if you change your mind, or think about going some other time, and I'll ask my sister in law. She's in Spain at the moment, and I can't call her, but she does visit the outer Hebrides quite often and might be able to offer some advice. I really haven't a clue, I've been to Skye, but that was more than 40 years ago on a Scout camp. I do seem to remember that it was raining when we arrived, and was still raining when we left a week later, but most of our camps were like that...!

And that could have been any time of the year, not necessarily autumn!

Unless you are camping, when prolonged bad weather can be really depressing, I'd say go if you have the chance - a great place.

In Oct/Nov you'll probably get some good self catering deals.
