School sports day help.

I have loads of piccies from 15/20 years ago when my kids were at school and nobody complained as I fired away with the FA,winder and wopping great 60-300 lens. How sad that times have changed for the worse

The internet and digital photography are a big part of that change. 20 years ago and physically having to post photographs to groups of people limited to those you know made the potential audience 0.0000001% of what it is now.

Some of the schools are really tough on this and one of the main reasons is for the protection of children under protection orders from the courts. (Abusive parent/family etc etc )

Some of the time, the schools don't act to protect the children but to protect their revenue earning stream.

I believe we have our legal answer on this one anyway so whatever schools say has no relevance (if we wanted) in public places.

As for enhanced crb checks...what do kids say these days..."that's whack!"

Because you openly stated that you had agreed not to post them on the internet.

As I said, it will be discussed and a decision will be made as to whether it will be reinstated.

That was because I didn't know where I stood with the law and as it was proved, he had no right to ask me anyway. It was a public affair, the deputy head shouldn't have asked me because it was none of his business and my images are for me to do with as I please.

People should know what they're talking about before spouting their interpretation of the law. I am not doing anything wrong here by rights and everyone knows it.

Besides...they are legitimate images that are within the rules and I am not portraying any of these kids in a bad light.

Final word: That's not fair.

Legally you are possibly right; although having asked for permission and then broken the terms of your licence there is a potential issue of trespass.

Morally however, you are completely wrong.

You asked. You had an answer. You didn't like it and now you've had a paddy.

Apart from anything else, there is a world of difference between taking photographs and publishing them. Just in case you are in any doubt, posting a photograph is publishing, and therefore you are subject to the same laws and restrictions as any publisher.

Personally I can take photographs of kids at a school event if I wanted, but I don't because I am governed by a fairly strict code in this respect...

this one:

http://www.pcc.org.uk/cop/practice.html

which clearly states

iii) Pupils must not be approached or photographed at school without the permission of the school authorities.

I don't expect a hobbiest like you to understand or respect those rules, but I do expect you to have some #### manners and not drop other photographers in the merde.

Legitimate? Possibly.
Within the rules? Perhaps.
Right? Abso-bloody-lutely not.

As for not fair....

perlease!

Put your knickers back on and get off your "professional" high horse.

YOU are the press guy so why not worry about what you do with YOUR contracts.

I never had a contract.

If someone is wrongly imprisoned but then later evidence proves them to be innocent, should they stay in jail?

I found out it's ok for me to post so no matter what you say about morals and the rest of it, the bottom line is...it's up to me to do as I please with my images.

AND as we're on the subject of morals and people like me giving people like you a bad name...

Isn't it the press that publish photos of celebrities getting up to no go or showing their underwear off etc...

And what have I done?

Oh yes...I shared some images of kids enjoying their sports day. WHERE ARE THE HANDCUFFS!?!?!?

The point is that other parents wanted to see the shots i had taken when they were printed they did not accuse me of being some sort of pervert

You still don't get it do you?

It's because of selfish attitudes like yours that parents get banned from taking photographs in the first place.

It would have been fine to take the pics, but publishing them is an entirely different matter.

Just how popular will your niece's parents be if the school discovers that you've gone against their express request and institutes a blanket ban on cameras?

Again I'll reiterate the point; Capture v Publication. Entirely different.

Lastly for your info; I'm a press photographer, not a pap. Big difference. You've just acted like a pap.

Right, let's draw a line under this right now before this thread gets closed too.

As Marc has already said, the photo thread is under discussion in the staffroom and we'll let you know once a decision has been made. No need for any further debate about it in here.

I can't believe I am reading this, it is people like you that have contributed to the situation we (as photographers) now find ourselves in whereby we are not permitted to take photographs of our children at their events. By ignoring the wishes of the school staff and posting the pictures on the Internet you have behaved in a totally irresponsible manner.

You have also stated you didn't have a contract, I beg to differ as it appears you entered into a verbal contract (although I am no lawyer).

By the tone of your post you may not think that morals or ethics are very important or maybe that they do not apply to you but you should give some serious thought as to how your actions will be perceived.

Ok we have established I have the morals of a dog. I accept it on this particular case. Now let's await a response.

final word??

Take a day out to sort your attitude

Well handled Mods, if I may say. It was spiraling out of control and needed to be resolved. A great pity some people can't see common sense and morals over their personal agenda.
