Yes
I often hear of photographers complaining that school photography should be left to the big boys "Tempest", however over the last year there has been a staggering amount of independent companies now doing this style of work.

Is the high street portrait photographer desperate with weddings now being done by students for £100?

: popcorn :

Mind if I join you?

Steve, in all seriousness, do a search and read some of Daryl's posts about School's photography. You could learn an awful lot from his approach and ideas.

I have no popcorn but I can supply the drinks

Let's go!!

Don't forget the Jalapeños!

Lol! I was waiting for a reaction what took you so long!!!???

You know full well I'm joking lol

Sofa's getting crowded!

So what is the question?

Is it that wedding / portrait photographers are now doing school photography because students are doing weddings?

Phil

I think its because everyone who does school photography is sick of being accused of pedophilia.. and terrorism.. :-) :exit:

Its not only students now shooting weddings, its the people who have gone into Jessops bought a Camera for £800 quid, who are turning a very poor set of pictures in the B&W at the weekends for £300.

Rant over

So I take it that no one has got anything to reply back to Steve then?

Hmmmm any spare tar and a brush

Got my gear from Jessops, cost me £800. Just wondering if im missing out on the £300 for a weekend ;)

I have nothing against Jessops. I worked there once upon a time for my sins and was constantly met buy people asking for " I am going to become a wedding photographer, i have £600 what camera should i get "

the op was saying "Is the high street portrait photographer desperate with weddings now being done by students for £100? " i was responding to this to say its not only students. Ultimatly more people than ever are taking photos now which is fantastic. Its great, it will bring the price of kit down, it will mean cameras will progress a lot quicker, due to a higher demand.

But with this, we are getting saturated with chancres, This is ruining it for people who are making a living by taking photos.

Is it any wonder that people will take work away from the pro, what ever kind of photography it is - wedding , schools, etc? The technology has opened things up, and everyone is trying to get a bargain . So who do you blame? The public? , the Government? The manufacturers? The TV?.

The point is that a Pro will do a better and more consistent job than a lesser or a joe soap member of the public, or at least they should do.

Yup I agree, and now we have a healthy debate ;) Although if the wedding togs are branching out into school work, it's hypocritical as most are moaning that their work is being robbed ;)

From the way the opening post was written, it took me a long time to figure out what the heck the guy was talking about.

People need to use commas more. :(

But anywho, wedding photography and school photography...hmm...

I suspect if you're feeling challenged by others, you'll want to branch out and do as much work as you can. If a pro is truly amongst pros...why feel threatened? The quality of the work surely shows through in their portfolio.

Couple of myths need disspelling here.. too many people living in denial.... back in the real world........ :)

You get what you pay for? Sorry but thats utter tripe in this industry.. I have seen work from amatuers and hobbyists that would put many pro work to shame... People love taking pics and love others wanting them.. its simply not a case of only the best charge and everyone else is rubbish... thats pure nonsense...

Why feel threatened if your pics are good? Well in the real world thats easy to answer.. people would prefer free (no matter what quality) over paid for (again no matter what quality) In this day and age its all 600px pictures for internet usage and so long as its a decent crop anything will look good at that size.. poor or good free beats anyhting paid for in today market

Relying on the fact that your pictures are better isnt a good plan.. neither is trying to convince the whole picture buying public that only top price pics are the best...

Just IMHO.

Now lets get this thread on the rd :)

Kipper? good to see you again.

I have been under cover on Mums.net... and guess what? whether it be Schools are studio portraits thaey think WE, as photographers are taking the Micheal.

Why? They think everything is too expensive. 10x8 for £10...... OUTRAGE!!!!!!

Now put quality aside and the quality of kit you use. Take that as read you provide the best.

Joe Public do not care. Because they look at the piece of paper in their hand and compare it to taking their own photo to ASDA or TESCO for 50p.

I got hammered when trying to explain. Training/equipement/fuel/pro lab costs and that oil prices will make everything more expensive this year coming.

They don't care. not interested. And before some tog says 'We need to educate them!'

Good luck on that one...... you are running up hill like an asthmatic ant carrying some heavy shopping.

It's the big Superstores that are killing the business like they do to all others thaey undercut.
