Hi all, I'm off on my way to north wales tomorrow. Fairly early start. I will be heading from Derby/Stoke-On-Trent area, usually head up the A500 > A51 > A55 along the top of wales, but ideally seems as I have most of the day, I would like to go on a nice scenic drive. Don't mind doing a longer distance if the views and stop offs are worth it.

Maybe I should head towards Wrexham down to the A5 and head up toward betws-y-coed area? My final destination will be Llandudno on the North Coast, for around tea-time to early evening.

Any advice? I really don't know wales that much, but would like to see more of snowdonia area perhaps. As you know I love my landscape photography, but don't really know the sites in north wales.

Any advice appreicated

Personally I'd go via Betws-y-Coed, Pen-y-pass and Llanberis. You'll get a good appreciation of the scenery there, weather permitting!

A good place for photos is Dinorwic slate quarry, which is fairly easy to get to by car from Llanberis.

If you get on the A5 to go to Betws y coed, follown on the same road to Cwm Idwal which is just after Capel Curig. Park there, and a quick 30 minute walk will take you to the lake with the devils Kitchen in the background. There is also a wooden bridge over the stream that lends itself to foreground shots of the lake. Enjoy.

This is sounding good, any other scenic locations worth a stop at on the A5 route? I have been to betws-y-coed before which was nice. Ideally fairly close to the road 30 mins walk or less. Any nice high pass roads with stopping areas for panoramic vistas? Or is it a case of hikink to get any height?

horseshoe pass via llangollen is nice

I agree with this, then on to Betwys y coed, then over to Llanberis, Also, Sychnant pass to Llandudno / conwy is nice and scary :D

Think I have a good scenic route forming now, is the detour via horshoe pass worth it? Then back down to the A5? Or a different way?

Definitely go via the horseshoe pass. Well worth it. There are pull in places to stop and take a few pics. You get plenty of bikes up there as well blasting through.
