SCARED OF CRITICISM?

So.. my worst problem in school was "constructive criticism" and though i'm older and wiser it makes me wonder to what degree i've improved, specifically when i pore over website crit threads.. and wonder would I ever do it to myself? I'd love to know what can be improved etc, but as I did it all myself I have the fear of many things being wrong AND as it brings in business anyway I don't feel a great urge to purge the soul :D

Have you ever had similar thoughts?

(I don't post often.. when I do.. oh dear)

i used to hate constructive critisism but now i crave it, as if it is acknowledging that i can do something.

the thing to get over is the fact the even if someone dislikes your work ask them why and what could be done to make it better. Nobody like everything thats why you filter through the people that dislike what you've posted and compare to what people like and try to combine the two.

I love being critisised because it makes me work hard to improve

Website crit is a load of tosh if you are getting the results you require and your visitors return (if you want them to).

I'm more concerned that all info required (including pricing) can be found easily; the pages validate; the pages are efficient; there's no dependence on extensions (JavaScript etc) for basic functionality; written content is spell-checked.

So, my sites may lack the wow-factor, style-wise, but they are dead easy to find.

For me the best criticism in any area comes from someone who does the sort of work that you admire.
If your website works, spelling is all checked and you and your clients are happy with it then leave it alone.
If you think there is room for improvement then ask for crit, but wear a tin hat and make sure its on a day that you can take a battering

Best not to criictise and you won't get the flak back.

I rarely post up images for crit. It's not that I can't take crit, but as with anywhere, there's always the odd one of two who don't seem able to give constructive critisism. And very often it only takes one cutting comment to make you wonder why you bothered. I mostly shoot for myself now, and if I'm happy and whoever I took the shot of is happy then that's enough for now.

And I'm not interested in people telling me I'll never get any better without crit thanks :D

I prefer to get constructive crit on my pics rather than "nice shot" or worse still, no comments at all. If (if ) I've done something wrong or could have improved the shot with a few minor changes I really want to know, especially with my lighting ones.

I try not to be harsh if someone asks for an opinion on a shot, I'll look for and express what I like first, then if there is something I think they could benefit from, i'll mention that. Then it would be positively and finished with a reminder I liked something. I call it a comfort sandwich .. actually i half just made that up.

Agree with FITP. I post to get C&C, not just some nice shot comments (as if! :D). I know full well I'm not good at this and I'm here to get pointers.

On the flip side, I also find giving critique is beneficial as well. Always find it much easier to see what I might change in someone else's image, I don't find it easy to express that necessarily. But putting it into words will help me be more critical of my own work I believe.

Just because you might make money from something doesn't mean someone's opinion of your work isn't valid, good or bad.

It's not a question of getting 'flak' and should not be viewed as such unless the criticism is non-constructive.

The whole point of posting for critique is to receive criticism so that you can hopefully learn from others and do it differently if you so chose. :)

A well constructed sentence, to the point and grammatically correct. However, the 'i' should have been capitalised, and the correct spelling is 'criticism'.
