Hi everyone, I'm Matt, I've been requested by many people to join the forums for help and advice with scanning all sorts of formats. I own several high end scanners including an ICG 12000dpi drum scanner and two Fuji Lanovia Quattro pre-press scanners. As well as an array of low budget models just for comparisons. I've also had every Imacon and Nikon Scanner produced so know all the differences in image quality from scanner to scanner.So if anyone needs any guidance on Scanning, just post a link.
Been in the design/repro industry for 20 years so I know the in's and outs of colour reproduction and the print industry.
 
Welcome Matt, the film forum is full of people who scan so no doubt there will be plenty of questions for you.

I'll start off with a nice easy one for you that I've been thinking about for a couple of days:

In digital photography colour management is a big thing but when we scan from film to digital its not something we talk about very often. Can you and should you create a colour profile for your scanner? Would it need to be done for each type of film or do you use a standard target?

Hi Kev, ideally you need to start out with flat raw scan of an it8 target for both reflective and transmissive, print out a scan of both with no adjustments and then calibrate the monitor, printer to the scan. X-Rite is just piece of kit I use. Once your into the high end scanners then Fuji has it's own calibration targets and full profile lists for film such as Velvia, Provia, Ektachrome, Ilford etc. I scan to a profile then convert the profile back to Standard Adobe RGB in a batch conversion for consumer use etc.

Most scanners only offer variable inputs with no profile scanning, and just settings for white and black points and colour correcton, which usually affects the original drastically. Also many peoples monitors are out of calibration from the scanner, monitor to printer and hence why so many people have trouble with scanning tricky originals.

I scan and proof all sorts for big organisations such as National Trust etc

Hi and :welcome: ... I think I will bombard you with a load of questions, but I will do a thread on this, instead of hijacking your welcoming one.

I hope you enjoy this, and take from it as much as we will drain out of you :p ... but I am not sure, are you into photography :shrug: .. or just at the scan end of the spectrum?
