I'm being driven insane by vuescan. The auto skew is complete rubbish and won't straighten a print placed not absolutely straight on the scanner bed. It's impossible to do it totally straight.

I need some software that actually has enough brain to do edge detection to find the edge of the photo itself and straighten it.

Alternatively is there some batch processing software out there that would process a load of poorly aligned scans and automagically crop and straighten them all?

I have even tried the manual skew method and aligned the print up so I expected it to come out straight. Nope. Still comes out wonky!

It's so frustrating. This should be a simple task but vuescan really can't manage it at all.

Needs to be mac lion too as I'm still on lion....

Never had a problem with vuescan myself.

You're lucky. The auto skew just doesn't work for me most of the time. Sometimes restarting the software makes it work again without even moving the print. Vuescan is very buggy if you do any mass scanning. Refresh is also dodgy so you have to click off a frame in a batch and click back when you're doing film.

Tried silverfast. That doesn't seem to even offer it in the basic version.

Which version are you using.
The latest is 9.2.18 and it seems to work every time for me. but it might be an interaction with your particular scanner software. Mine works with my epson printer scanner sx215 my canoscan 8600f and my old minolta scan dual ll.

It's been the same with every single version I have ever used! The bugs are consistent (preview refresh, auto skew). I've had about 8 or so that I've used over the years and they all do the same. Same on tiger and lion.

I've used it with an epson 3490 (auto skew fails, preview refresh issue)
Minolta 5400 film scanner. Ditto preview refresh fail.
Epson 4870. Same as 3490 bugs wise.

I've given up on auto skew and resorted to losing a bit of an edge by shoving the print against either side to keep them straighter. Some are still slightly off as the print machines aren't always true. Some are also printed not quite straight when they're bordered.

I have had a play with mine it only corrects up to about 5 degrees over that it does not work.
The manual skewing only goes to 5 degrees as well.
