Scanning question - which bit rate should I use for negatives?

What bit rate should I use when scanning my negatives? I currently use the higher settings (16bit for B&W, and 48bit for colour), but don't know if this is worthwhile or just producing larger files for no real gain in quality. This is using an Epson V5500 and the Epson Scan software.

My negatives are predominantly 35mm, but I'll be scanning 120 format sometimes too.

Thanks.

Stick to 16 bits per channel. It is much like shooting digital Raw - you can edit to a higher standard.

Do a few scans of the same negative(s) at different bit rates to see where the law of diminishing returns kicks in.
