Hi,

A friend in work has given me a photo of a relative that has recently passed away. The family would like this photo cleaned up and reprinted larger.

So far i have scanned this photo in at 600dpi and it is saved as Jpg.
I have cloned out some areas that they wanted to remove.

The next bit i am not sure on, how do i lighten this photo ??
I am using PSE7, so would an adjustment layer with curves or levels be the best.

yes, (dependent on your image a bit though)
Another common trick if its an old scanned photo is to duplicate the image, and change the top layer to overlay of softlight, adjust the opacity of this layer to suit, this will boost the contrast in the pic, then use a levels or curves adjustment on top to brighten if necessary,

Have been working on a few restoration projects myself recently will post a thread about it sometime.

Instead of scanning you can take a photo of it and process in RAW giving you 16 bit image to work with. As said above you need to work in an uncompressed format so that you have more information to work with.

Never though of scanning .tiff

What advantage does this give me over jpg.

Thanks for all your help..

The scanner i was using would only scan b+w tiff ??
This is obviously no good.

So i setup a mini studio with flash etc and took a photo of the photo in raw.

This allowed me to adjust in camera raw and clone in PSE7.
They are pleased with the photo as this was the latest they had.
